Too Many Frats, Right?

by:

I went through recruitment and considered 5-6 frats. For me it was an easy decision. But having seen many of the fraternities, don't you think there are just too many on this campus? There are several that are worthwhile, but many more that are barely hanging on. And it seems to be a revolving door for the bad ones that are on probation and getting kicked off campus. I think about 10 of them are expendable. And there are too many sororities, too. Especially with a low point in demographics/enrollment.

I've often thought this. There are sororities that struggle to make quota and lose lots of members the first year. But it's even worse with fraternities. The new ones on campus don't have a history or alumni support and some of the established houses have members who don't think they have to play by the rules, so they get kicked off. I think it's unfair to pretend that you are a viable house when you are barely hanging on. It's a disservice to have so many greek organizations on campus that aren't thriving. Get rid of them.

Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Sigma Delta Tau are examples of sororities that left because of failing to be viable. Phi Mu was off campus for many years before re-establishing. Some think that Sigma Sigma Sigma is best suited for smaller colleges and universities, and Sigma Kappa has had two previous presences at Mizzou. As to fraternities Delta Chi, Theta Chi, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Kappa Lambda, Alpha Sigma Phi - fraternities that are dependent on leasing and not having permanent houses - are definitely handicapped when it comes to realistic viability. Of these, only TKE has a long history of presence here. These houses are bound to struggle when having to compete with DU, Beta, Fiji, AgRho, KA, Pike, ATO, PhiDelt, PhiPsi, SigEp, Delt, FH, SigNu, AEPi, ZBT, and even currently suspended SigChi and SAE. PhiKap and PiKap have a chance of viability. KappaSig has certainly been viable in the past but without a house, the future isn't clear. It does seem that a number of fraternities are expendable and fewer could lead to an improved Greek system here.

Too many frats? I honestly don't know, but it is a good question. I guess it could be said that the more frats (sororities) there are, the better chance people who want to join one have. But the fact that some are just barely hanging on does make the question valid and important. There is something to be said for quality over quantity and there sure are some frats that are hurting when it comes to quality.

Sororities, too. Some are barely hanging on and aren't honest about it.

AEPi, AgRho, AgSig, ATO, Beta, Delt, DU, FH, KA, PhiDelt, Fiji, PhiPsi, Pike, SigNu, SigEp, ZBT are the fraternities have the history of longevity here and are subsequently the most viable and have the best chance of thriving. They also aren't handicapped with a dependency on renting/leasing from suspended fraternities. SigChi and SAE, once back on campus, will also have solid footing for viability. Sorry, but the frats that don't own a house are setting themselves up for not much more than very short-term success/prominence.
