Far away in a different time zone

by:

I will be attending Mizzou's J-School from out of state and am wondering what to expect during recruitment. I have a 3.9 gpa from a competitive h.s. and will be entering with enough AP credits to almost be a sophomore. I also was active in music competitions, was editor of my school newspaper and was homecoming queen. But since I live 700 miles away, I don't know anyone at Mizzou. I have read that some houses mainly take friends of members and that some draw from certain high schools in STL or KC. Will any houses consider me for membership? Should I even bother going through recruitment?

Yes, houses will consider you for membership! Yes, you should bother going through recruitment!
You are accurate in saying some houses mainly take friends of members and that some draw from certain high schools. The operative word is "some" which does not translate to "all". And don't rule out "some" considering outside the friends/certain high school zone.
Hope to see you!

I'm from out of state and I had a great time, with lots of outstanding choices, when I went through recruitment. What I have learned since then is that the houses that just take friends or who choose from a limited number of schools aren't houses you would want to be in anyway. You sound like an outstanding girl. You will do just fine.

I'm another "out-of-stater" and my recruitment experience was very positive, just as I'm finding Greek life to be a very positive experience. Since one of the advantages of joining a fraternity or sorority is to broaden one's horizons and to gain exposure to varied types and personalities, a house that focuses its recruitment on just friends and certain high schools lessens or looses that advantage. Fortunately, Mizzou has a number of very good sororities (and fraternities) that are inclusive of members of different types, life experiences as well as diversity in friends and high school backgrounds. Go through recruitment! Pledge! And be happy!

What are the houses that are especially accepting of out-of-state girls (or, conversely, which houses don't just choose friends of members and/or from a select group of high schools)?

I know PiPhi, ADPi and AXO have a lot of out-of-state girls and are known for taking the best girls they can without regard for specific high schools or areas. I have heard that TriDelt, Kappa and XO tend to recruit heavily from in-state and that they are somewhat limited in the high schools they recruit from. Remember, too, that there are a bunch of houses that take whomever they can get to fill a pledge class. Not sure you would have those at the top of your list.

Lots of thoughtful, articulate answers on this one. Thanks to the Greek community for taking the time to think about this one and to answer in such a helpful way.
