hi guys

by:

Hi I'm a senior in high school right now, I've been browsing this site a lot lately just because I'm really excited to rush even though it isn't for a long time! I just wanted an idea of what houses have the best reputations, good grades, are pretty, etc etc. I'm definitely interested in kappa, pi phi and delta the most right now! They all seem very similar to each other from what I know and the girls I've met so far from those houses seem like they embody what a sorority should be very well. Any thoughts on these houses or other suggestions for what I'm looking for? Is it hard to get into these particular houses? Do they have strict grade cuts? Are they heavy on rec letters? Help me out!

Well first of all, don't make impressions from this crappy site. Those three sororities you mention are really not similar. It really depends what you want. The rec letters will help for more selective sororities, but honestly, the best thing you can do is be well rounded, make stellar grades and have athletic/artistic/leadership assets. When you go through recruitment, you will be looked at as a possible sister; someone who is genuinely likeable and fits well with the established group. Do your homework and look at grades and how they do in competitions, because most sororities will "present well" during recruitment week. You simply can't choose based on those impressions alone. Talk to girls in various sororities and get their honest opinions. You will read a lot on here that it's all about looks or whatever, but that simply isn't true. A sorority who consistently does well in competitions has a strong sisterhood and they care about achieving. You want to wear your letters proudly. Good luck!

As a freshman, I was you just a year ago! I would read greek rank to try and figure out the reputations and I don't blame you for being on here. I can try and give you the best advice that I can. First, you can try and get as many rec letters as you want, be as involved as you want, but if you have a bad GPA (below a 3.0) it is unlikely that you will get asked back to a lot of houses - especially the three you mentioned. Also, even if you are the perfect PNM on paper (legacy/rec letters/good gpa/involvement), if you can't keep a good conversation and are awkward - you will most likely get cut at some point. Lastly, know what you want in a house. I'll post the reps below.

Sisterhood:
- every house has good and bad things about their sisterhoods, but the houses that are known for having more negative sisterhoods (as of now, and in the past) are : ZTA, Sigma, KD, DG
HOCO/GW
- if you want a house that is really competitive (lots of pomping, stricter rules, etc): KKG, KAO, XO, Adpi
Social -
- PBP, DDD, Gphi, and recently Aphi, DG
Typically "pretty houses"
DDD, PBP, Gphi
There's a lot more that goes into it but that's just the main things people talk about. Grades and hoco/gw info is on the PHA website. I will most likely get attacked for this post, but I'm just trying to give you what I think is the general opinion on these houses. All of our chapters are amazing in different ways.

When I was in your place I was given some advice and I'll pass it on. Look at the houses that have smart girls and make good grades. Among those, look at which ones are competitive in campus events. Of course you want a house that has a close sisterhood and nice, pretty girls because otherwise you get a negative stereotype. Those are the most important things but you have to start with a house that's good academically because that's why you're going to college. You definitely want to be rewarded for doing well, not criticized because you're studying instead of socializing.

But also do not count out middle or lower tier houses if you get cut from your favorites. I agree that top tier is the best way to experience greek life but my cousin is in a lower-middle tier house here, she pledged just to test it out after she got her bid, and she loves it. She spends all her time with her sisters and talks so highly of them. While they don't place in much and aren't known for looks she absolutely adores it. So keep an open mind as well!
