Distancing from high school friends

by:

Did any of you older girls use recruitment and joining a sorority as an opportunity to distance yourself from your high school friends? I started to realize how mean a majority of the girls I hangout with are, besides like 2 of the 7 in my group. I’m just over the attention and popularity seeking, bullying they do to others, and the drama starting. We’re all going to Mizzou in the fall and I really wanna cut ties with most of them, but feel kinda feel bad about it. I’m just hoping to join a sorority full of kind girls who aren’t into vain stuff and have a fresh start to start building meaningful friendships.

That's one of the reasons I chose a school 350 miles from my hometown. No one here that I know.

The problem is that some women just don't want to leave high school behind. They were big fish in a very small pond. They are the same women who ask, first and foremost, where someone went to high school when meeting them for the first time. They are St. Louis private school girls and they roam in packs. I would stay far, far away. Happy to say I'm in a respected house and we tend to get rid of them early during recruitment.

The truth is that nobody cares where you went to high school or how popular you were then. I'm sure they will learn their lesson when nobody in college takes them seriously. An advantage of going to such a large school is that you won't see people you know too often. I believe joining a house may help you slowly branch away from them.

Just don't alienate them before recruitment. If they have friends/sisters in a house, one bad word from them can result in negative votes for you. Once you get in a house you can distance yourself. And, yes, in some houses it matters a lot where you went to high school. Those are the houses to avoid.

Do what’s right for you keep a few close ones, but also incorporate new ones!
