curious

Who is undeniably the top tier at mizzou. Like THE top 5 houses. And real, thorough reasons why they are top. I'm rushing next year and just want a general idea of who is looked highly upon. I'm not saying these are the houses I want in, Im just curious. Thanks everyone.

I would highly advise against aiming for only top tier houses because unless you are exceptional you will probably not get a bid to one of them. Rush here is very competitive and to get into ANY house you have to be amazing. That being said, the five houses that most people consider top are...

Kappa
Theta
Chi-O
Pi Phi
Delta

Personally I think ADPi is top because they do well in comps and that's important to me, I joined a house that does well in comps that wasn't ADPi so it's something I respect in a house over looks/party girl reputation. However most people consider ADPi upper middle tier along with GPhi. If you're trying to get into a house based on what is considered good, then any of the top five I mentioned plus GPhi and ADPi are considered good picks. The rest sort of fall in middle tier and bottom tier territory.

Again, any house is wonderful to be apart of and you would be lucky to get a bid because it's very hard here because of the sheer volume of girls there are. My advice is advice you're going to hear over and over but it does help. Keep an open mind regardless of tier. Because all of our sororities are good :)

You probably should know that rush is much more about which houses want you than which houses you want. Better to find that out early so that you can adjust your attitude.

I wouldn't be worried about getting in to a top tier house, I'd be more concerned with being in a low tier house. Seriously. Being in a top house is great, but mid tier is just fine too. It's the bottom tier that you want to avoid. At least when you're a frosh or soph. Upper class men don't care what house you're in really. But sigma, Zeta, phi mu are absolutely social suicide houses. Zeta may not be as much anymore now that SK is here, but SK has done well enough for themselves that zeta is still on shaky ground in bottom tier. I don't mean to be rude, but people will definitely judge you if you're in sigma, zeta, or phi mu.

I don't think the above post is correct. I don't think there is a house at Mizzou that is social suicide. Yes wearing the letters of a top house will get lots of positive attention, but a sisterhood is a sisterhood and wonderful and lasting friendships can be found anywhere. And all sororities are paired with fraternities for the big stuff, and that's lots of fun and you would be surprised how many people start dating after working together on homecoming etc. I think that "social suicide" label is more a reflection of the person who wrote it than reality. Just being in a sorority counts for a lot at Mizzou, so if you choosed to be Greek you can find happiness in all sorts of places.

I'm in a house that is considered top or mid tier, depending on who you talk to, and I would say that every single sorority at Mizzou has something wonderful to offer. Yes, some houses are "weaker" than others, but sorority life is about sisterhood, philanthropy, and making life long bonds with people. You're in college for four years, after that, tiers won't matter. When you're an alumna, nobody cares what sorority you're in because sororities are different on every campus.. for example, Phi Mu is very strong in the South, but a little weaker at Mizzou. I have friends in bottom tier sororities that are very happy where they are simply because they have made amazing friends and have been able to participate in something greater than themselves. It's what you make of it. If you sit around saying "Wow, I'm in a bottom tier house, I suck," you will probably have a poor experience. But if you ignore tiers and focus on the sisterhood aspect, you will enjoy yourself.

Do you really believe that sororities don't matter after you graduate? Just as men often join fraternities for leadership, networking and the opportunity to increase professional contacts after they graduate, so do women. My sister graduated from Mizzou three years ago. She had several job offers and found out about each job opening through sorority friends. Winners in college are winners after college. Don't doubt it for a minute.

That came out wrong. I meant to say that tiers don't matter once you've graduated because they vary so much on a national level.

but! Keep in mind, this is only the answer to your question. it is such an honor to be greek at all on this campus. more than half the girls you rush with next year will not receive a bid at all, and only 1/3 of the girls that do receive bids will be in these five houses. plus, nobody really cares about tiers anyway. anyone worth associating yourself with is supportive of all chapters regardless.

youll hear this a lot, but going greek was the best decision i ever made. Im in what is considered a lower-middle tier house and i LOVE it. I dont even care that we aren't considered top, i really dont. when i first got my bid, my mind was still stuck in high school so i thought, omg this is an unpopular house, i should just drop. i stuck it out for a while and I am so glad i did. I have met my best friends here and have become more involved than ive ever been in my life.

some girls even prefer middle or lower houses because they feel less pressure to be "THE BEST." or they just connected better with them. In the end, every sorority has the same goals: To establish life long friendships, become involved in their school and community, stay social with all their peers, and as cheesy as it sounds, just to help you be the best you can be as you transition from teenager to adult. so please, keep your options wide open! you will find your fit.

Your top houses are.... (In no order)

Chi O: this house dominates the campus. Don't get your hopes up tooooo high for this house, they give bids to girls with very specific personalities. Its alllll about being the best at everything here and having fun while being the best. You could be the prettiest/smartest girl ever, if your personality doesn't impress them, forget it.

Kappa: This is the classy house, also extremely selective. Probably the most well rounded chapter at mizzou. Good looking girls for the most part, they place/win in almost every competition, they have been on campus forever, they're rich, strong nationals, highest retention rate and a strong sisterhood. the definition of a true sorority.

Theta: the most intense chapter. This house is all about GRADES and building your resume.. and winning things at whatever it takes. Can't really go wrong with this house, but, good luck getting a bid here. They tie with Kappa, Chi O and Pi Phi for most selective houses.

Pi Phi: Legacy house. They are huuuge on legacy here and high GPA's. Also, a very good looking house as well. They are very social and maintain great grades. An all around solid house that girls (and guys) enjoy.

Delta: they have been previously known for the best looks but have recently become more well rounded and accepting of a variety of girls with fitting personalities. These ladies are usually very nice and social with everyone. they are ALWAYS welcome at parties and typically have decent grades.

I'm not even sure the person who wrote this even goes to Mizzou. First of all, Theta is such a one-trick pony that it has fallen to high-mid tier. It has emphasized grades for so long that now that it isn't tops in grades it isn't known for much of anything except being somewhat socially awkward. Kappa is not that selective. Yes, they have upped their game in recent years and choose quality, well-rounded girls, but they are pretty much made up of girls who didn't make it into ChiO, PiPhi and, to a lesser extent, Theta. It's a very good sisterhood, just not as selective as many others. And who in the world thinks PiPhi is all about legacies? In fact, they are known more for poaching other house's legacies than taking their own. Hearts break every year when legacies think they will be a shoe-in at this house but get cut before the last day. Instead they have built a reputation on taking extremely well-qualified girls from out-of-state rather than getting involved in that cheesy "what high school are you from" St. Louis attitude. ChiO also gets girls who are outstanding in a variety of areas, but personality only goes so far. Some of these girls are just odd hippie chicks who pretend to be intellectual but really are just sort of strange. They are working on changing that reputation and overall it is a great house, but it's good that they are working on their image and taking in a few Delta types as well as the emo-angst types.

I actually think this response by "answer" is pretty accurate... pretty much nailed it. aside from the pi phi legacy thing, im not sure how accurate that is.
