Just another sorority girl who didn't want to play by the rules. While my house has many women of color as members and legitimately does not discriminate, we treat everyone alike when it comes to how they represent our sorority on social media. I am not surprised she got in trouble. In our house, I'm not sure she would have been kept as a member after her violation of the rules. Note to other PNMs who might be reading this: we cut people all the time based on their social media during recruitment. And just because you want to seem like you have lots of friends and like to party, that's not the image we hold dear. My heart goes out to this young woman if Phi Mu didn't make that clear, but she really has only herself to blame, and I doubt if it was racially motivated.

In this student newspaper article we learn: she was informed of the rules, she violated the rules, she survived a vote by members and was not kicked out. So where's the discrimination? The article clearly does not support the premise that she was victimized because she was black. I'm sorry her mental health suffered and she quit, but there is nothing here, folks. Time to move along.

I read the whole story. Other than some anonymous quote about acting and/or looking white, I fail to see any discrimination. BTW, I'm black and am very happy in a house with many other women of color where I truly believe we are appreciated for who we are. I never felt that I had to act or look white during recruitment. I'm sorry this girl thought she had to, but that was bad advice.

I have mixed feelings on this. After reading her twitter thread it’s really sad to see how much being in a sorority took a toll on her mental health.

However I D.o.n.t think it’s fair to say that she was racially profiled based on what she’s said, or that she was treated unfairly. If anyone in my chapter posted a photo of them next to a playboy bunny car for example, they’d be asked to take it down. If an underage girl posted a picture of them at the Heidelberg and they tagged them, they’d be asked to remove the location because the Heidelberg is a bar. To mean that’s not that big of a deal.

I’m sure she’s a nice girl and there’s no doubt her mental health suffered especially because she’s still talking about it over a year after leaving. I feel bad about that. But her being smart and saying she had a 33 act and whatnot has nothing to do with what she was posting online. When you join a sorority, you know what you’re getting yourself into and that you can’t get away with posting photos at bars or with alcohol when you’re underage.
