why are some sororities top tier/
by: PensiveWhy are a handful of sororities always in the mix when ranking the top houses at Mizzou? I have given this some thought, and I think it has a lot to do with tradition/history. Houses like PiPhi, ChiO, Theta, TriDelt, ADPi etc. have been around for 100 years and have super strong nationals. That has resulted in beautiful houses (the structures) and decade after decade of strong membership and thousands of members whose daughters are now legacies. Those legacies also know what the quality houses are and won't settle for anything else (and will even quit rush if they get cut by those houses). It almost seems like success begets success and the newer sororities on campus don't have much of a chance to make it into top tier (or high mid-tier). It also seems that unless you are a legacy and your family has been part of the Greek system you don't get a fair shot at a top tier house (and, yes, I know being a legacy doesn't guarantee membership, but it does indicate a bit about your background). In a way it all hardly seems fair. What do you think? Am I off base on this? I'd especially be interested in hearing from women who DID get a fair shot at the top when they went through recruitment even if they are first-gen Greeks.

I am from out of state (East Coast) and chose Mizzou in part because of the Greek scene. Since I didn't know even one person when I came here I thought it would be a great way to make lasting friends. My dream is to do magazine design and the J-School program is the best place to learn that. My mother, sister and grandmother were in sororities, but they don't have their chapters on this campus so I wasn't a legacy. I was amazed at how friendly and welcoming every house was during formal and I was thrilled at the results. I got my top choice but really would have been proud to join any of the last 5 or 6 as the week went on. So, no I wasn't a legacy but I was still chosen by top houses every step of the way. I had great grades/ACTs/activities, but doesn't everyone going through recruitment. I also didn't have any friends here to put in a good word for me, but that didn't seem to hurt. I think recruitment is quite fair and it's not just about legacies. I also thank God for this place. I really feel as if I am right where I should be.

Judging from a couple of these comments, some of these people haven’t mentally left high school. The honest answer is that yes, it seems like once a house is a “top house” it’ll stay that way for years. The same few houses are always the “top” but that is because they have been around longer, stronger nationals, have more alumna and funding. There is a definite plus side to being on the top, you get to pick who you want in your house. However, this system sets it up so that the newer houses can barely attempt to grow. Why does mizzou continue to place new houses on campus, when it seems like they are doomed from the start? Many have issues retaining girls after the first few years, why add houses when some have issues keeping girls? Being a legacy will not get you far in recruitment, but it does make you stand out in the first round or so. The real issue for people out of state is not knowing people, but that can be a blessing or a curse depending on the situation.

Ten years ago DG was one of the “5 Queens” but due to a hazing incident fell hard and far. This happened to TriDelt too but they came back after about 3 years. GPhi goes up and down but has had their reputation since my mom was here 35 years ago. Also ChiO was mid tier ‘80-‘90. When my Aunt was here APhi was the bottom. Just sayin that things change over the years. PiPhi could take a big fall and PhiMu could rise high. It all has to do with recruitment, grades and alumni support.

Hmmm. That doesn't explain why DG, Alpha Phi and a few others that have been here almost from the beginning are struggling. Statistics show that Mizzou can support more sororities, but the office of Greek Life and PanHell have to do a better job of choosing which ones. TriSig and PhiMu, for example, have terrible nationals. And SK has tried and failed twice previously.
