last preference night
by: Mama PWhat happens if you only put the one house you are interested in down for tonight's presence? My daughter got 3 invites but is only interested in one house.

Tell her to rank all 3 even if she doesnt think she likes the others. She can drop out if she really doesnt like it and atleast she will have tried and wont have any regrets. Suiciding does NOT increase your chances of getting a bid back to that house so its pointless.

How does that work that she would go down on the bid list. My daughter wants to suicide because she doesnt want to be in the other 2 houses she got invited back to today. She was told if she turns down a bid then she is ineligible to do any type informal recruitment process until next next year.

First, it's best not to suicide because you never know what your opinion of a house will be after a week or two. A house you were on the fence about could end up being your perfect home. They've talked to women in each house for a total of what, 4 hours this week? And they've probably only met a small fraction of the house. If you give a house a chance, you may be very pleasantly surprised.
Second, it's best not to suicide because if you do, you are not eligible to be a quota addition Last year 11 houses had quota additions, but those are only women who maximized their options. Without going into too much detail, quota additions are girls who maximized their options (i.e. listed every party on their pref card) but who fell through the cracks and didn't make a bid list. They can then be added to a chapter, and probably their first choice chapter. But, if they suicided, they are not eligible to be added.

Suicidimg a house does not put you further down on a houses list. This is untrue information. With so many girls going through rush, a sorority has no idea if she suicided or placed a particular house 2nd or third. She should suicide if she can't see herself in another house! Just knowing that she may not ultimately get a bid at all!

So, what happens if you pref all 3, essentially to protect yourself, and get a bid from a house you don't want? Doesn't that scar you if you turn it down? In other words, you are put in a position where you are in the midst of everyone who is thrilled about their bids and you say, no thanks....does that make you uneligible or "marked" for the next recruitment opportunity? How does that reflect your reputation?
My daughter is terribly upset and nervous about that.
