who needs a new house?

by:

We have some lovely new houses on this campus. DG and Zeta, among others, really stepped it up. GPhi is getting its act together. ADPi and PiPhi have beautifully updated decor. But some houses are pretty much dumps. Which sororities do you think could benefit from a new house?

APhi. And this is not some bash against them. They genuinely just need a house revamp

Why don't Alpha Phi's alums do something about that godawful house? It puts the local chapter at a real disadvantage during recruitment. An update/new house is long overdue. I also think the Kappa house is too stuffy. And SK's house is a bit of an architectural monstrosity.

Definitely am not the OP. But you keep doing you. They are honestly the only house on campus that needs a full redo, and you know it.

Alpha Phi national and alums have been telling the local chapter to get its SHT together for years and start abiding by some grade standards. Only if they do that will they get financial support for a better house. It will help retention, too.

While there are a few houses that are not very attractive (APhi, KD, SK), there are more that are absolutely gorgeous. When I went through rush I couldn't believe how beautiful the ADPi, PiPhi and Kappa houses were. In my mind they were even better than I imagined sorority houses would look like.

This is a double-edged sword - having a new/upgraded house may make a sorority more attractive, but even with the alumnae support, those new or upgraded facilities end up costing members a great amount of increase in house fees and dues.

Having a new/updated house might price some sororities out of consideration by some PNMs - if a housing fees/dues are too expensive, they may take a pass on that sisterhood.

Please share if you know - who has the highest to lowest fees per member?

That may be true in some cases, but not all. Some of the sororities with the prettiest houses don't cost any more than the average. It's not about the quality of the house, it's about retention and how the sorority handles its money. Some are better than others. Plus, the difference isn't that significant. If you are shopping for a sorority based on cost, your priorities are a little messed up.

If retention is the issue, don't you think that members who pay all of their school and sorority fees themselves - with no parental or outside help - might look at the cost of a house once they are in, and decide they can't afford it?

"Not really" - you must have parents or family who are paying your way. For some outstanding, quality sorority women or PNMs - they don't have that luxury or option.

If you have trouble affording your college education and if your parents aren't helping you out, spending money on a sorority is an odd priority. Just saying...

No, the BEST houses update their decor and remodel regularly, and that's costly, too. A house that is financially responsible collects dues and does alumnae appeals consistently so that they always have money on hand to spend on remodeling, redecorating and even building. If a house jacks up dues significantly so that it is above the norm because of improvements, it just means that they don't know what they are doing financially because that should have been factored in. And if a house is a dump, that tells you there are membership AND alum issues and that there is not much support. Stay away from those houses.

I am NOT a troll. I am a senior "active" sorority member who has lived in an apartment the last 2 years with several women who joined an assortment of houses, and then dropped out/de-activated/took alumni status.

The main reason they did this? The cost of membership/dues, which in many cases grew from when they initially pledged due to sorority house re-models/upgrades.

And it is NOT unheard of for a student to be putting themselves through Mizzou and still wanting to experience sorority membership.

If you can't afford a sorority, you shouldn't join.

Building an entirely new house is a significantly larger investment than remodelling. So again, there are nice old (and updated) houses that likely never needed to increase dues to afford their updating, and then there's houses who built entirely new homes... Please name one sorority with a new house that hasn't jacked their dues to help fund the renovation....
