by: Question

Which sororities if any have confirmed that they're participating in informal recruitment?? Who participated last year?

There are six listed on the Panhell website - A Phi, Gamma Phi, Pi Phi, Phi Mu, Tri-Sig and Zeta. Possibly more to come.

Were those left-over from last Spring's Informal?

Those were the ones that were added to the Panhell website after Formal Recruitment ended on Sunday.

For those who dropped because they didn't get the house they thought they deserved - now's your chance to take another look at the houses going through Informal.

It's not too late to find your sorority home!

Should girls with GPAs in the 3.1-3.3 range even bother?

I know two girls, who I figured would be able to pick the house they wanted, both got cut from all their top houses and decided to drop. The only explanation that makes sense is grades, but looking for confirmation.

Top houses still have high standards during informal. A 3.1 to 3.3 just isn't going to cut it no matter what.

Thanks Nope. Your response is very much appreciated.

If these girls get great grades this fall semester, does that become what they are measured on, rather than their old high school GPAs? Their thought is to work hard on grades this semester, then try to informal rush in the spring (with whatever houses do it), or possibly even wait until next fall.

Feedback from anyone on this is appreciated. The college experience for these girls is not starting out like they expected/hoped.

When you go through rush second semester or as a sophomore, your college grades are used, not your high school gpa. If they struggled in h.s. it might be difficult to do a lot better in college, but I would work hard this year and give it a try in August 2019. They also should get involved in legit activities this year, too, including some volunteering.

I think it all depends on the high school. My baccalaureate school didn't hand out A's like candy. A 3.1-3.3 actually was a pretty good gpa, and 96% of us went on to four-year colleges -- including many Ivy League schools. I had a 3.2, but a 34 on my ACTs and a 1320 on my SATs. But then I'm from out of state. Having been behind the scenes during recruitment the last two years I have seen girls with 3.8 and 3.9 gpas and 25 on their ACTs, which tells us that their A's meant nothing and that they would be grade risks. GPA is not really indicative of much at all.

There's a difference between not handing out A's and A's not being attainable

A's are always attainable. In some cases, you just have to be the best.

exactly so a high school GPA higher than a 3.1 is more than attainable, that isn't even a good GPA in university accounting...

Does kappa ever do informal and if they have cut you before in formal rush-should you expect the same with informal? Thanks.

Though their national doesn't like it, Kappa has done informal on occasion. Same with Theta and PiPhi. Their nationals frown on it and they only do it when there are extenuating circumstances.

Go through informal if you still want that sorority experience and don't want to wait until Formal Recruitment next year.

And by taking another look at the houses participating in Informal, you may find that some of the other houses are the perfect place for you, grades notwithstanding.

And a "top tier" house is not always the right fit for everyone - so keep an open mind as you go through the process.

Alpha Phi, Phi Mu, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Delta Delta are listed on the Panhell site as going through open bidding.

Informal rush is pretty sketchy. You may sign up and hear nothing at all while friends of current members are getting bids. Informal is the best way for a house to get people quickly and keep paying the bills, but not to get the best possible candidates. I have heard of cases where outstanding women are overlooked simply because they are minorities or from small towns or out of state so they have no friends in the house. If it were me, I would stay far, far away.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever read. Legit. "Stay away from informal because some sketchy people get in." Um ... hello. What difference does that make to someone who is participating?

It's informal itself that's sketchy. No oversight or regulation. The opportunity for discrimination on all sorts of levels. Plus you don't get to see all of the houses and why would you choose a house from such a limited selection anyway?
