what kind of academic support do sororities provide?

by:

i'm just wondering whether it'd be worth chasing a sorority that's strong academically

Some have mandatory study hours, either in house or at the library. Some require new members to report their test/paper scores to see if there are any problem areas where tutoring is needed. Most have ancient files with former tests and papers, but since so much is done online that's dwindling. The best houses communicate their expectations clearly and have members in every school and major offering support. Other houses, however, don't offer any of this or just the bare minimum. You know which houses those are because they don't have grade cuts during recruitment and their gpa's are at the bottom of the barrel.

I am interested in joining a house where academics are a priority. Would asking about academic support and standards be appropriate during recruitment?

I wouldn't ask early in the process because its a bit presumptuous to talk about specifics like that when you don't know how interested a house is in you. But on the last day right before bids are issued, yes, you could ask about how a house supports its members when it comes to academics.

To be completely honest with you, academics is something each chapter strives to have excellence in, some do better than others obviously, but your chapter will always encourage you to perform your best in school. When you don’t make grades in a sorority, so like below 2.75-3.0 semester GPA (varies depending on chapter) you put on probation which usually includes a limitation on socials and other fun things. You will be in a chapter full of women who can help you out if your struggle with a subject and will never be without a study buddy. I love that you’re so enthusiadtic about school, but academics will only be a portion of why you want to join a chapter especially when it comes down to ones that are practically matched academically. It’s obviously one of your values so go with it, but approaching recruitment from a more wholistic view really helped me and I can’t promise you you’ll love where you end up just because they’re the top in grades, it really just depends.
