financials for houses

by: Queue

Plan to do recruitment this August. Can anyone please tell me which houses are on the less expensive side of things? My parents are paying for most of my education but they have said sorority dues/fees are all mine. Also if anyone knows which houses are to avoid due to high cost/money expectations that would be great. Thanks!

Making any decision based on cost alone, is a bad idea. Find a few houses you are comfortable with and then consider the cost.

And then, be disappointed when you figure out you can't afford it?

We're in college now ladies, time to start making financially smart decisions.

Unless you come from a wealthy family who will pick up the tab for you, if you are responsible for sorority fees, be aware of what is expected of you, financially speaking, before you get all excited by a house you cannot afford to be a member of.

If being financially smart is your first priority, don't pledge. It's that simple. And if you base your decision on finances only, you might be making a huge mistake over a difference of just a few hundred dollars. I am not from a wealthy family and yet my parents are footing the entire bill for tuition and housing. That's because they were financially smart and had 18 years to put money aside for my college. That's what responsible parents do, instead of expecting their kids to take on tens of thousands of dollars of debt for their education. I pay for my own incidentals and I also made sure I would get academic scholarships to offset costs. It's also why I opted for a state university instead of a private school. So let's eliminate your attitude about only the wealthy paying for their kids college. It was just part of simple financial planning. And it's still stupid to choose sisterhood for life based on the few houses with bargain basement prices. You get what you pay for.

This shouldn't be exclusively a financial decision; it has lifelong implications. Know that it costs more to be in a sorority and all cost more than a dorm/apartment. Plus even when you live in an apartment after your year in the house you will still pay dues -- unless you decide to stiff your house, which is a big negative and really frowned upon. If you are watching every penny there are other ways to go through college than being in a sorority.

Any of the houses that are newer or are planning to renovate/build new will have higher dues than other houses.

Some houses don't raise dues, but pay for remodeling/rebuilding with cash they have put aside through the years or with alumni support. Some of the most gorgeous houses don't have dues that are any higher than those who are not at full capacity and are always playing catch-up. That's why it is important to choose a house that is on firm financial footing, without retention issues.

Ty for your responses. Just to clear things up. I’m not going to choose a house solely on financials but it will play a part in my decision. We are not struggling financially at all and I have been saving for awhile for this. So any other thoughts are appreciated!!

Hey girl! From my personal experience going through rush last year and what I know- the two most costly houses are delta gamma and kappa kappa gamma (they are both quite a bit higher than other houses) besides them, other houses prices are extremely comparable! Hope this helps :)

Hello And good luck with recruitment! I am in a house on the lower end of the costs- however I have friends that are on the higher end with both the dues and exepectations for money spent for clothes-activities etc. The higher cost houses I believe to be are kappa-DG-and pi phi- hope this helps!

I agree DG and Kappa are the most expensive. I also have heard that ChiO is one of the more expensive houses. I don't think PiPhi is any higher than most houses.

Kkg=dada pay for me! High cost and high rollers. A lot of them are private hs grads. Avoid if you are worried about the cost at all!

Kappa doesn't have any more rich/private school girls than any other house. They just pretend they do. People who have REAL money never boast about it.

My roommate was a Kappa. She didn't have two extra nickels to rug together. LOL. I think the real money is in ChiO and PiPhi, but that's just my opinion based on girls I know in those houses.

One thing to be aware of is that some houses include extras like tshirts and event costs in your dues already, and some require you to pay for them in addition to your dues. Also, things like having littles can add to your costs.
