expected time commitment for sororities at mizzou
by: Kerry
I'd love to get some feedback regarding time commitment. I understand that a girl should not pledge a sorority unless she wants to be involved in the house and wants to put time into her house. And I understand that a girl will usually get more out of a house and her college greek life experience - the more time she put into it. And I understand that a girl who can manage her time well should have no problem with any expectations regarding time commitments for any sorority house. Nonetheless, aside from these well known general statements, lets talk about the actual expected level of commitment from house to house - which I think could be very informative to incoming freshmen looking to join a house.
What are the expectations regarding pledges in terms of time commitment?
How does it become different when they become active?
How does it become different when they move into the house as a sophomore?
How does it become different if they move off campus as a jr/sr.?
What are the average number of hours expected per week - normally?
What about the number of hours during homecoming and greek week?
What events are "required" and what events are "optional"?
Perhaps some would like to comment on sororities at Mizzou in general which would be great. But it may be even more beneficial to also learn facts regarding specific houses from those that actually belong to that sorority.
Thank you in advance to all for your input!

You should ask all of this when you get to a house to get different opinions. I am very involved with my house but don't hold any positions, so I'll try to give you a general range. There are girls who literally do NOTHING in my house and don't enjoy it as much, but its an option.
1. new members have one meeting a week
2. initiated members have chapter once a week
For every other requirement, new members and initiated members have equal responsibilities, anything else is considered hazing and you should absolutely report your chapter if they are doing this.
3. living in house will be likely to get you roped into helping with more mundane tasks like painting banners, or getting your opinion on skits, but theres no required extra activities (also skipping chapter this a bad reason is harder)
4. moving off campus makes things harder to participate because you aren't on campus or in house getting pulled into things and it can feel like you're out of the loop, so theres more travel time if you want to help with things, not to mention parking
5. Expected would probably be around 4 or 5 hours, most girls would probably be around 6, I was at around 10 with no extreme extra effort, it's just attending things and helping out
6. Homecoming hours... yikes 5-7 extra a week? Theres a reason fall gpa's are lower. GreekWeek depends on if you're in fling or dance, then obviously more, otherwise, like 1 or 2 extra hours
7. required are chapter, ritual events, and enough to keep in good stand

If these are really important questions to you, you have to ask them at the houses. As a member, I would love to see that much investment from a PNM. They will give you pretty straightforward answers. Just know that many of the houses (especially the ones that use things like Homecoming and Greek Week success as selling points) will expect a large number of hours the first semester for homecoming. That was probably the most out-of-nowhere time commitment for myself. Hope it helps!

ing. Optional would be socials, banquets, marriage, divorce, and engagement parties, also most volunteering events.
Gah! so much, but I hope that was anything like what you were looking for. Any chapter at mizzou is fabulous, but I'd really check out which one you click with! Prepare questions you really want answered to ask at each house and ask each girl about her specific involvement to get a feel for how the house as a whole is! (: You sound very interested and planning on getting super involved which is a huge part of how my house selects members. Can't wait to see you mingling at my house!
Good luck this fall!
