what is going to happen?

I absolutely agree with freshmen not being able to live in fraternity houses. It's done that way on many other campuses, and most of those frats have a much higher overall fraternity gpa than mizzou. I can't tell you how many pledges I talked to over the summer who mentioned that they were interested in getting into the 5-year accounting master's program or who wanted to become doctors, lawyers or vets. And then they came here and their gpa plummeted because they received no academic support while living in the house. It can ruin their future.

Mizzou and Texas A and M are the ONLY SEC schools that let freshmen men live in Greek houses from the minute they move to campus. Kentucky lets freshmen men move into fraternity houses second semester if there are vacancies (which there usually aren't since housing contracts are signed for a full academic year). LSU also allows freshmen men in houses the second semester if they meet GPA requirements and don't account for more than 20% of members in a house. Auburn and Florida don't have policies preventing freshmen in fraternity houses but recruitment in both schools isn't held before the fall semester begins which means that most recruits will already have housing. Eight other SEC schools have outright bans against freshmen in Greek houses. Outside of the SEC, Oklahoma has required freshmen fraternity members to live in the dorms for several years.

Moving freshmen out of chapter houses creates an economic problem for organizations that have large debt for recent construction according to some alumni and undergrads. Not sure just how accurate that is. I can see where a house corporation board might have some concerns; but after building a $7 million house (half of that being mortgage debt), DU put its freshmen in the dorms and allowed only a few to move into the house for second semester. True, DU had one of the higher housing bills, but the cost didn't hurt its membership numbers. Apparently when it re-colonizes later this year and then moves back into its house in '19, freshmen will again be housed in dorms. That kinda makes large debt for recent construction a weak argument for keeping freshmen in Greek houses.

The IFC halt on all new member activities in response to hazing allegations expired yesterday, March 19. It's guessing time as to what the council might do next - if anything. Sometimes IFC seems pretty impotent which isn't all that surprising as it does have members/officers who belong to some of the fraternities already in deep $heet or facing the prospects of deep $heet.
