rush
by: frehsmanIm going to be a freshman this fall and definitely want to be in a top tier house. I have a few recs for Kappa and Pi Phi but none for the others... will this affect my chances? Also how much do high school grades matter.. i have about a 2.5. Im good looking but never the prettiest in the room and am really outgoing. Do you think my chances are slim for a top tier sorority?

I'm going to tell you something that you'll hear ALL throughout rush week: DO NOT make your mind up before you go in each house. Yes, grades matter for every house. Some have a very high cut-off for their PNMs, but you might love a house that you never expected to like. Rec letters are not required, they could help, then again they might not. Just keep an open mind and pick the girls that you feel comfortable with. I went into recruitment with my heart set on Theta and every time I talked to girls there, I just couldn't see myself there. I could see myself in my house, hanging out with those girls from day one. Stay involved, stay friendly, and stay positive about every house. Have an amazing summer!

if you have a 2.5 you will get cut from most houses before you step foot in them. grade cut offs are usually 2.6 at the MINIMUM. many of the better houses (like your top and mid tier) are 2.9-3.0. You may only be looking at houses like Sigma or Phi Mu. Maybe APhi because I have heard they have no GPA requirement. Sorry but it's the truth.

Also - rec letters really don't do a lot. At least for my house. We end up with binders and binders full of rec letters and there is really no way to look through them all. However, if a rec letter catches our eye will will pull it out and put it in a pile of "target" PNM's. These are the girls that our best most outgoing beautiful talkative members will be set up to talk to. They will also become examples for our new members to look at to compare to poor examples of girls coming through rush. Overall, all houses want a well-balanced girl. On paper we want someone who was involved, has leadership, and good grades (our grade cut off is a 2.9). When we meet them we want girls who are outgoing, attractive, friendly, fun to be around, and someone we can see ourselves being best friends with. Hope this little insider helps. Good luck!

As far as I know, most chapters have relatively high grade cutoffs (3.0 and above). The lowest grade cutoffs I've heard of are about 2.75, so like a poster said above, just work your tail off freshman year, get a good GPA, rush as a sophomore. You will be cut by pretty much every house for your grades alone, sorry.

I went through rush as a sophomore with a 2.7 GPA and got asked back to Kappa through Pref Night before I dropped the process entirely. So it's not IMPOSSIBLE with Kappa but the girls above have the right idea. Boost your GPA and rush as a sophomore if you want to better your chances.
