informal

I've said this before and gotten dragged for it, but it's worth repeating: informal is a great option that if chapters can take, they should. It let's them hand pick amazing women who might have slipped through the cracks during recruitment or who didn't rush but became interested. It financially supports a house (and don't buy the BS that "good houses don't need the money"; everyone in the chapter benefits from larger budgets). I think more and more chapters are coming around to the idea. Additionally, since PHA made it mandatory to list yourselves, a lot of "secret" informal bidding was outed and the stigma went away.

I don't know how many chapters will be having open informals and how many will just be inviting friends - I just know that I'm proud as a PHA women that more and more chapters are realizing what a great opportunity COBing is!

LOL you aren't a PNM.... a pnm doesn't know whether or not "chapter totals seem fine." You're just in one of those houses that's doing informal and think you're too good for it so you spent your precious time making a post to suggest top houses only opened up in order to let friends in.. yawn

By "chapter totals look fine", what I meant was that I looked over the chapter grade reports in comparison to prior semesters and only one or two looked like they need any new girls really. One other is over 280 members and is holding informal recruitment. My suspicion is that they are only going to be recruiting friends. But it could be that they have a large house and would like some new members beyond friends. Honestly, I'd just like to know what is going on with them because I like their website and GPA.

BTW, I am an accounting major, and already have made spreadsheets for all of the chapters. I know . . . please don't criticize, its just something I do! I love discovering data trends and finding out I am right.

From my data I see one chapter had a big drop last year but seems to have recovered, and another one seems to have had a big drop this year. I know very little about either chapter, but am curious.

Anyway, I have looked over the recruitment sections of all of the chapters and some have an email and invite questions, others don't and tell you to register for formal or go to the PHA website. I am hesitant to email them.

Also, don't all of the chapters already have my grades and activities? A bit confused here!

Email the recruitment chairs directly of houses you are interested in. Make sure to attach a resume highlighting your great first semester grades and outside involvement to boost your prospects! There is no guarantee, and if this round doesn't work out please consider rushing next fall - quite a few houses take sophomores and it will be easier to get a bid.

FWIW all of the posts above are from me. I just asked why so many chapters are doing informal and should I contact them.

Looks to me like the chapter numbers are good right now, but I see big drops coming because the big 2014 and 2015 classes will be graduating this spring and next spring with much smaller classes coming in.

It seemed to me that the chapters would want more women, and I saw that a lot of chapters listed, so I registered for informal.

Now I read here that PHA is making the chapters list to recruit friends. It makes a lot of sense to me that they are listing for that reason, and that's fine.

Just wanted to know what is going on and what I should do, if anything.

I can see why this pnm didn't get a bid first try... give me ADPi vibes though, give them a shot next year if informal doesn't work out

^ yea well you would never make it as an ADPi because you don't seem to be able to read. This PNM didn't go through recruitment previously. So it would have been VERY difficult to get a bid. But don't let that stop you from dissing ADPi.

BTW I have taken the advice above and am still chill. I am charting trends of college basketball teams for my boyfriend for March Madness (again!) which puts my skills to good use and makes him the envy of all his friends!

My only question is--does anybody have a general idea how long the chapters may be doing informal? I have now received invites from several but not most of the chapters. Only one has given me a schedule.

I'm just a bit curious!
