mizzou advisors
by: MizGreekMizzou Advisors are actively discouraging men from joining fraternities. Was told by a legacies dad that the advisors are telling incoming freshmen that they should avoid fraternities their first year because they will be responsible for all homecoming pomping, cleaning etc. Basically Mizzou is telling men they are going to be hazed, don't join. This is total BS on the part of the university and we shouldn't stand for it. More than 60% of all contributions that come back to the university are from Greek alumni. Make sure your alumni know what's going on.

I need to know the names of the advisors, how many of them are doing this and when it became the pol;icy of the advising staff to make this recommendation. Since advisors are spread all around this campus and the advising for the most part is done by department, I doubt there is a universal recommendation. More likely this advisor was talking to a marginal student who got mediocre grades in high school and is at high risk for flunking out. Until you can tell us that it is a university-wide policy and when it went into effect, I call bullsht.

You can't see the problem in Mizzou trying to influence the living situations of freshmen men? You are greek correct? Are you familiar with how house operations work? If you don't see the value of Greek life, than maybe this isn't a concern for you. This isn't antidotal evidence, this has been going on for a couple years and frankly, this was the straw that broke the camels back for me. The way I see it, Mizzou has empty dorms, so we are an easy target for saving revenue.

All Fraternity average 3.057
All Male average 2.973
New Member male 2.980
All Freshman male 2.761
You are cherry picking your statistics by including women. The all university average (3.129) is significantly higher than the all male average (2.973). What I don't see the university keeping track of is what GPA males living in the dorms are compared to those in fraternities. It would have to be lower, because the all male average and the all freshmen male average lag the Greek averages.
There are 36 fraternities. 21 of them have averages above 3.0. New member classes are smaller and thus more directly affected by one washout. Which everyone gets.
Greek Life is most certainly not for everyone. That's not the argument. The argument is that it is for some, and the university shouldn't be using its influence to cast doubts on individuals decision.

Agreed. By the way, is there any concept more ignorant than pomping? Lets make our pledges (yes, not all, but the vast majority of pomping is done by pledges) spend hours of time over many weeks sitting down and dipping colored tissue into goo then sticking it on to some boards. Is this college or kindergarten?? And if you don't get your required hours in then you will be fined or worse. Yes, people, pomping is considered to be that crucial of an activity that you can be fined and penalized for not doing enough of it each fall.
