formal rush quesitions

by:

Hey y'all! I will be transferring to Mizzou for my sophomore year (out of state) with a 3.8 gpa from my previous university, I was just curious:
1) what is it like to rush your sophomore instead of your freshman year?
2) will houses drop you just because you aren't a freshman?
3) what are your recommendations on preparation for recruitment?

1. Your college GPA is exemplary. So that likely will not be a factor for houses in cutting you during the first rounds, so yay!
2. In terms of differences between freshmen/sophomore rushing... There really isn't a big difference, especially with your high GPA! Were you involved in any clubs your freshmen year? If so, this will also help. As always though it also helps if you have rec letters or know girls in the respective chapters you are most interested in.
3. My advice, start getting in contact with friends if possible! Get involved in volunteer work, or something like it over these next few months. Practice your conversation skills. And most of all, be confident. You have a year of school under your belt, and this can/will set you apart during recruitment! Be yourself, dress nice, and everything should work out for the better :)

GOOOD LUCK.

1. I hope you've signed up for rush. REgistration ends Friday. July 21.
2. Your grades are fine. It's too late to add activities or volunteer efforts, but if you had awards or leadership positions, mention them.
3. Get recs. Lots of them. This is how chapters separate average candidates from superior candidates because recs are from people who KNOW YOU and who can speak to your best qualities. Start submitting them ASAP.
4. The best houses don't take many sophs, but there are many good houses that would love to have you as a member. Keep an open mind.

Which houses are you considering "the best"?

All houses take at least a few sophomores, so I think you have a chance at every house. But some houses have trouble filling their quotas and so add a larger number of sophomores to the mix. (The reasons sophomores are not as in demand as freshmen is that freshmen will pay dues all four years and are more likely to stick together/remain members because they will be the same age when they live in the house and bond as a result). The houses that are least likely to take sophomores are those that are most selective and have no problem attracting outstanding freshmen.

Yes, get recs. They matter.
