house conditions

by: Wondering

What are thoughts on the physical condition of houses? Obviously it's hard to compare the brand new houses, but in trying to be objective, which houses on the inside did you like/dislike/feel comfortable in/feel like you were in Granny's old, falling down house. Some houses look like they are taken care of really well from the outside with landscaping, etc-some not so much. Opinions-just for fun!

That's so rude! I'm just wondering because if I get into this house I don't want to have to pay for all sorts of repairs if the house is sinking or falling into the ground or whatever is really happening. I guess I'd like to know more. My parents are making me pay for some of my sorority dues.

If you like historic houses, ADPi and PiPhi are beautiful and because of their strong alumni network they are constantly being remodeled and updated. If you think newer is better, ChiO, Zeta and DG might be to your liking. Of the remaining houses, most are well-maintained and attractive. APhi is kind of a dump, though, and needs a lot of TLC. And SK's house is just odd: they tried to turn a mid-century structure into something colonial and it just doesn't work.

Sororities are huge national organizations and usually have funds reserved at headquarters for house repairs. I can't say that dues wouldn't go up a little, but if a major house repair was needed a sorority would not all of a sudden double or triple your dues. I remember seeing where a house at another university burned down a few years back and their nationals paid for the repairs and even donated money to the girls who lived in there to replace their belongings. Good question to be thinking of though!

Wouldn't insurance cover that?

Yes, of course insurance would cover a fire. Duh.

I would be VERY surprised if a national organization contributed to the building of a house (without expecting something in return). At least on the Fraternity side, most of the National organizations are mostly take, and very little give. Our National really hasn't done much to help us and rarely have our back if we feel that we are being unfairly punished. They do provide a nice library for best practices that other chapters around the country developed.

Of course nationals get something in return. Each and every month they get a portion of sorority dues, not to mention donations from satisfied alums. That's how they continue to exist.

I will clarify, yes, Nationals get thousands of dollars every month. This is expected and does not count towards any type of housing assistance. I am talking, loans with interest, ownership stakes etc. I have never seen any grant or donation from National organizations.
