does appearances / weight affect your chances?

To be honest I've seen bigger girls (nothing wrong with that) in gphi and they are known as the "hot house" so I don't think your chances are really all that limited and houses like KD, Sigma, Phi Mu, AXO, and Kappa are filled with girls of all different sizes so I wouldn't worry! Just be yourself and if you're worried about how you look, wear what you're comfortable in and make sure it accentuates your best features.

It's all about your personality. Their are large girls in "hot houses" too like Gphi. There are large girls in upper tier houses like adpi, chi o, axo. Just because your heavier doesn't mean you will only be able to join a bottom tier house! Go in with a winning smile and a stunning personality and have some confidence! You'll do great!

Before I started running I was a "big girl" and went through rush at my largest. I wasn't happy with how I looked, but I didn't beat myself up. I did the best with what I had and before recruitment I 1) got a great haircut and color 2) learned how to apply makeup so that it looked natural 3) tried on a bunch of clothes so that I found the styles that were the most flattering and 4) worked REALLY hard on my conversational skills so that I could put others at ease. I made it into what most people consider a Top 3 house and have made great friends and have had a great experience. I also took up running at the rec and actually made great friends that way, too. I would say just be your best self, smile and be confident in what you have to offer. Also I had great grades and activities before recruitment, so that probably helped.

I think the best houses tend to be the least superficial. They look at the "whole package," rather than just recruiting for looks. So be your best self and see what happens. You might be surprised. That said, it's July first. You have 6+ weeks until rush. If you step it up, you could lose 15 lbs. between now and then.

It really is completely based on personality more than looks. The house commented on here as "hot" has larger girls because they are confident, outgoing and fun. This isn't a characteristic of your weight. Trust the system that you will be where you fit best. Decide if you will allow the system to work for you. Do what makes you feel comfortable and confident .
