alpha phi at mizzou

by:

Hey so I'm in alpha phi and thinking about transferring to mizzou. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about them? I've seen a bunch of girls on insta and they all have been really pretty but then I came onto this website and it seems like people have a lot of bad things to say about them so I was wondering if someone could fill me in?

They're a train wreck. Poor retention, low grades, lots of turnover.

Everyone loves to bash Aphi on this site. Don't listen to the hate. They're actually all really sweet and fun.

They may be .2 of a gpa behind the average but they're the most genuine fun group of girls I know.

Here's some facts: aphi has told their members on bidday for 2 years that they only chose them bc they were the "prettiest girls in Greek town" and have poor retention rates because the members with brains dropped bc they didn't want to be part of a shallow sisterhood. The people in aphi pick their littles based on how many Instagram likes they get. Their exec board told them to come on this site and self rank, which is proved because they have so many more ranking than the other houses. So if you're someone who supports that, then you'll fit right in.

I think you're giving them too much credit. Yes, they are a shallow house and, yes, smart girls never consider joining or drop when they realize the reputation of the house. And, yes, they self-rank like crazy because they are just like that. But it's not as if Alpha Phi has much of a choice about who they get. As rush winds down, they pretty much take anyone who will join who is not a beast.

For being one of the oldest sororities on campus. For being a HUGE national sorority. Obviously, something is going on. They need to find their own identity. 20 years ago they wanted to be Zeta. For the past 15 years they wanted to be Tri Delt. The past 10 years they want to be Gphi. Every single one of those houses stepped up their game and made strict cut offs. Yes, Tri Delt slipped there, and Gphi knew they could grab those top girls. Tri Delt is back, Gphi has established themselves. Fact-APhi cut some AMAZING girls this year because they didn't think they 'looked' the image they were looking for. HUGE mistake. AXO, Zeta, Kappa and DG got those girls that have the looks AND grades. One can not recruit only on looks. 9.5 times out of 10 aphi will lose those 'pretty' girls to tri delt and gphi. The top girls they have in their house are there because they followed their friends. Smart girls, yes. Independent girls, no. Still holding out hope for this house-but they must find their own image. When alum choose cut this house early on-it's time to reevaluate. Rumor has it, and it makes sense, nationals has invested in the mizzou chapter trying to recruit top girls. But until they set some cut offs, it's unfortunately not going to change. It's said over and over again, this chapter has so much potential. Lots of hope surrounding the new exec board-hopefully they will reach further than recruiting only the pretty girls-and they girls that they know from high school.

This is something their chapters do nationally, APhi does not have strict grade cuts anywhere (and are top at most schools despite this) and they probably don't care to change that because good GPA does not = sisterhood and does not = a great personality. Thinking a girl isn't valuable because she has a 3.5 GPA instead of a 3.7 is just as shallow as recruiting based on looks. What other people don't understand is yes, APhi girls are pretty, but they also have magnetic personalities that got them their bids. Personality/connection SHOULD be the first criteria during recruitment. Anyone can see when they spend time around APhi that those girls are extremely likeminded and really enjoy each other's company. If APhi employed stricter grade cuts they'd end up with some girls whose personalities don't mesh and cut a lot of girls whose personalities do. Mizzou's GR community (mainly) is so obsessed with GPA but that's not the case at most schools, even schools with stronger Greek communities than ours.

As evidenced by the number of girls who drop APhi, it's not as if looks result in a good sisterhood, either. The biggest factor in a strong sisterhood is that girls WANT to be in a house -- from the first moment of rush to that moment as a junior when they decide they want to keep paying their dues even though they are less and less involved in underclassmen type activities. The best houses keep their members for four years. They don't take many sophomores, they don't lose their freshmen, they don't COB, they love living in the house and almost always live with their sisters off campus as juniors and seniors. And it's not because of their looks, but it's because of their pride. Wish the same were true for APhi, because for being on this campus as long as they have, they sure aren't a very good house. And as their standards slip, it is more and more apparent that their national is getting weaker and weaker, too. I mean, have some standards, girls.

Any house has the choice to cob, APhi doesn't act like it's embarrassing - they welcome the opportunity to gain valuable new members. You can keep telling yourself that your sorority is great because you choose not to COB and while you waste all your precious time writing long thoughtful paragraphs about them, APhi will carry on making amazing memories with their sisters and having a much better time than this girl^ who'd rather spend her time trolling on Greek rank talking about Alpha Phi than hanging out with her perfect sisters and their amazing sisterhood. Those high standards really did the trick, who is the real winner here?

Many nationals won't let their local chapters COB. It just looks bad. And when a house keeps its members instead of losing them because they flunk out, drop out or don't care to stay a member, they don't have to replace them through COB. And who are youi to judge some else's sisterhood? What could you possibly know about it? And, yes, I do think my sisters are perfect. That's why we love our house.
