bad luck with cob
by: UghRecruitment in the fall just didn't work in my odds despite my open mindedness and everything seeeming like it was going perfect. I got crosscut after preference day and received a call from my Pi Chi on bid day that I had not received a bid. I was sad, but I heard that the houses I had on preference day, KD and SK, COB every year and thought that if I made it that far with them I would definitely have a chance at COB. Of course with my luck, PHA hasn't listed them as participating this year. The one year when I would need to COB their numbers are where they want and don't need new members in spring. I've made friends with people in the dorms, but they're literally all guys, and I really need girl friends. The only time I can go out to fraternities is when my cousin invites me to go out with her and her sorority sisters and I don't get that invite often enough. Considered trying with other houses, but aphi, gphi and phi mu already took their spring pledge class, tri delta never contacted me or responded to my emails and I genuinely didn't enjoy my time at sigma during recruitment, so I don't see there being much of a difference this time around. Is it worth going through recruitment again in fall? Would you recommend getting an apartment close to Greek town and campus or staying in a dorm single next year if I plan on doing recruitment again?

The best advice I've ever been given is that "to have a friend you have to be a friend." What are you doing to make friends? If you are waiting around for your cousin to ask you to join her and her friends, my guess is that you are an introvert or that you don't interact with other women in a meaningful way. While the sorority ship may have sailed without you aboard, it never hurts to work on your people skills, because that's something that will help you lifelong. And I wouldn't recommend that you live alone, because you will only feel more isolated. Sign up for a dorm and ask for a sophomore roommate. Perhaps someone who is transferring? Then you can get a fresh start and really make an effort.

The only way you get cut AFTER pref is if you didn't maximize your options.
If you went to every party you were invited to, you are guaranteed to get a bid. An invitation to pref means that they are willing to extend you a bid. You might not be on their #1 list but they would be willing to take you as a quota addition if you maximized your options and didn't match.
If you went to fewer parties than you got invited to, it is possible to not get a bid if you are too far down on everyone's list.

This woman is asking for advice and you trot out the same lecture you have delivered 1,000 times. How insensitive can you be? Clearly she was asked back to just two houses on the last day and she listed both. And she is NOT the only one who listed every house and didn't make it into any of them. You really 1) need to stop the misinformation and 2) need to stop hurting people's feeling by blaming them for doing the best they could do. How about you never deliver this "maximize your options" lecture again because it, obviously, is total bullsh it.
