They average around 70-80 for top and mid tier houses. Can't recall what quota was for the bottom tier... It's varies

Quota is the same for all chapters. Some chapters receive what is called a "quota addition" and that is why some have more than 71. If a chapter has fewer than what Greek Life established as quota for that recruitment, they did they did not "take quota." Quota additions are given based on PNMs who maximized their options and were not high enough on a chapter's bid list to be part of the new member class. Because they maximized their options, they are hand placed into one of the chapters that they attended on pref day.

Because it's not good to have to NEED that many girls to fill a house. taking That many girls over quota says that that house has trouble retaining members, and therefore trouble keeping average house total. In other words: They were allowed to take more pledges in order to reach total.

Love to know where these figures came from. They sound correct, but are they part of the official PanHel report that rush chairs got in November?

Yes. From Panhell report.

The low number of given bids is better bc that means the retention rates are high in that sorority so they don't need extra girls to cushion the blow when lots drop.
Personally I think this I should a better reflection of "top houses" bc anyone can judge a house by the outside out of jealousy, bitterness or stereotype but the numbers don't lie on where the members want to stay.

Gotta point out something here...when the previous year's graduate class is huge or a number of sisters are graduating early, and/or your house has a number of sisters out of town on internships or study abroad trips, that may mean that your house will want to pick up extra girls to fill the spaces and build your ranks.

It doesn't always mean that your house is hurting in anyway...actually, quite the opposite.

The best houses don't need to "build their ranks." That's why they don't COB.

Let's say that:
Total is 100
Quota is 30

Sorority A has 70 members. If they only get 25 girls, their membership is 95 and they can COB whenever they want for 5 more.

Sorority B has 80 members. If they only get 25 girls they can COB for 5 more to reach quota, even though they are above total (105).

Sorority C has 80 members. If they get 30 girls, they have met quota, are above total (110), and can't COB.

Sorority D has 60 members. They can take up to 40 (30 quota + 10 to reach total). If they still haven't reached 100, they can COB until they do.

After all that, if a PNM didn't match any sorority but maximized her options (went to as many parties as she was invited to), she will be placed in the smallest sorority that she attended pref for as a Quota Addition (QA).

The only reason a sorority gets above quota is with QAs or to reach total. No one gets to choose extra girls to "cushion the blow" of bad retention.

When chapters go over quota it's because there are Quota additions being added to their pledge class (no one knows who the QA are except like recruitment directors) PNMs who become quota additions only become so if the chapter actually wanted them, just didn't have them high enough on their original bid list.
Say quota is 50 and sorority ABC has PNMs 1-50 on their "ideal" bid list and PNMs 51-100 on their "nice to have" list. Ok so all of PNMs 1-50 ranked ABC number 1 on their bid card and they have the pledges. Woo! PNMs 51-100 get matched with other sororitys they prefed except pnm 75. She was not high enough on any other chapters list to get a bid, but she ranked abc number 1. Well she won't go bidless she will become a quota addition to ABC! Now ABCs pledge class is 51.
Well let's say instead if PNMs 50-75 didn't get matched to any of the other of the houses they prefed and they all ranked ABC 1, guess what? ABC gets 25 quota additions and a pledge class of 75. If any of those girls ranked another chapter higher they would go to that other chapter and they'd have the big pledge class.
I think having a bigger pledge class is a sign of a good thing. It means more PNM wanted you. I have friends at some other schools and it's always a competition to see who can get the biggest pledge class not the other way around.

Let's not lead people on. If a sorority cut you during formal it is highly unlikely they will take you during COB.

It's true.
