informal as a freshman or formal as a soph

by:

So I went through formal recruitment and didn't make it through, but now I think I do want to join a sorority. Do you think it would be better to try to rush informally this spring or try formal again next year as a sophomore?? I know it will be a lot harder as a sophomore and I would also have to work harder for grades and extracurriculars/volunteering. But I also think I was really unprepared for rush and would do a lot better the second time around. any advice? or past experiences

It depends on why you didn't make it through. If everyone cut you, it is unlikely you will get a more positive response if you go through formal as a sophomore. If you dropped because you weren't happy with the houses who asked you back, you probably won't be happy with the houses that are doing informal. The top houses don't do informal and the ones who do informal tend to just choose the girls they know rather than really opening things up and taking the best and brightest available. So, I don't know what to tell you.

^ All true. But you won't know how it works out unless you try. And regret is a terrible thing.

Try informal in the spring and take any bid you like. I rushed as a sophomore, had a reference letter for every house, knew at least one member very well, hadva 3.7 GPA and still got cut from all houses. It makes no sense and took me a while to realize it doesn't matter if you are Greek or not. You will have a blast at Mizzou either way. Most girls realize Greek life is over rated and drop when they start thinking for themselves junior and senior year. My friends are Greek, non Greek, and Greek drop outs. Don't let it define you, be yourself and you'll be fine.

I understand your need to rationalize being rejected by the Greek system, and I feel for you. But the fact of the matter is that most sorority women are very proud of their letters and it is ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE that "most girls think greek life is overrated and drop when they start thinking for themselves junior and senior year." It is true that they may become less involved, but that's because they no longer live in the house. I assure you that if you were greek you would know that it is not overrated and that most of us are absolutely happy with our decision to join, and remain, Greek for four years and beyond.

Your experience soured you on Greek life, I'm sure. But don't pretend you know what "most girls" in Greek life think. You can't possibly know since you have never attended a chapter meeting, never worked on a homecoming float or a skit, never had a pledge mom or a pledge daughter, never committed untold hours to planning a charity event with your sisters, never seen the pride of multi-generations who share the same sisterhood or have never brought your parents to visit the absolutely beautiful sorority house that you call home.

I dropped my freshman year of recruitment, and re rushed as a sophomore and got into a good house that i love! If first round it was just nerves id give it another shot! Recruitment is weird and scary and if you're from out of state (like me) knowing what to expect is hard! Plus Mizzou relys alot on who you know in houses, and if you didnt know anyone that could be hard.
