to do informal, or wait for formal next year?

I dropped during formal recruitment this year - but I really want to be in a sorority. Should I do Informal in the Spring, or wait and try Formal next Fall as a sophomore?

If you're a freshmen, wait until Fall rush. If you're a sophomore, COB if you can.

UNLESS the house you really want to be in is participating in COB. In that case, rush now. Don't COB just because you want to be Greek right now. Wait until you have all the options again, unless the option you want is rushing for Spring.
