fall cob?

by: almond

How does fall COB work? Can you just reach out to houses that you're interested in even if you didn't go through formal recruitment? Also, does anyone know which houses will be fall COBing?

Your options are limited for informal recruitment. Only certain houses will COB. Typically we see sigma, KD, phi mu, zeta, and SK COB every year. They will take anywhere between 5-20 girls.

Sometimes a mid tier house like Adpi or AXO COB as well, however the mid tier houses typically don't need as many girls. They will only handout 1-5 bids to make up for numbers of girls that went abroad or transferred.

If you wait to do formal as a sophomore you will have similar problems. You will be low on the bid list for any house because you are up against mostly freshman. You will probably see a low number of houses that call you back to each round.

If you're looking for a top tier house for either COB or formal as a sophomore, you most likely won't get one. Mid tier will be selective as their spots are very limited. Bottom tier houses are easier to join only because they typically can take more girls, however it is not guaranteed!

If you do informal, make sure you make goood friends with the girls that are actives in that chapter. Your connections will be your way in. If you rush as a sophomore, you need to make sure your grades are high (3.4 or higher), and that you are involved in other groups on campus.

You could register with PanHel and see what happens. But there is no guarantee. That's why people have said time and time again that the best chance of getting into a house is to do formal recruitment. With COBing, you might not ever get an invitation to a party. Every house does it differently and if there are rules, no one seems to know what they are. As a result it's often about who you know and is why the houses who do it are known for being cliquey. Also, there is a real potential for it to be discriminatory. so many of the girls who dropped out of rush because they didn't get asked back to the best house figure, oh, they'll just do open rush. Well, good luck with that.
