is it time for a new sorority?

by:

With all the talk of all the girls who were cut and/or dropped, is it time for a new chapter?

Chapters formerly at Mizzou:
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Omicron Pi
Delta Phi Epsilon
Phi Sigma Sigma
Theta Phi Alpha
Sigma Delta Tau

Sororities that haven't had chapters at Mizzou:
Alpha Sigma Alpha
Alpha Sigma Tau
Alpha Xi Delta
Delta Zeta

Could we support at least 5 more chapters?

Sigma has barely stayed afloat, they got a huge pledge class this year but now they have to continue to build on that.
Zeta is also struggling with the addition of SK. Zeta used to be considered a decent choice for bottom tier, and now that SK is here they have lost a lot of their PNMs to them. Zeta struggles with retention and has to COB multiple times a year just to stay at house total.

I think we need to evaluate our houses that need more support before adding new chapters. A new chapter would be either a death sentance to zeta or sigma, or a failure for the new house to flourish.

Does every post today lead to someone taking a stab at Zeta? Someone is on a roll the last two days and it's so obvious.

But at least whoever it is isn't screaming at people to name the Greek Week events. That was just bizarre.

Zeta Hater, you really never a break, do ya? Your thinly disguised "concern" about Zeta's demise, coupled with your repetitive wording makes you more transparent than ever. It's okay, honey, take a deep breath because Zeta is going to be here another 100 years.

Not a "zeta hater", my sister is a sophomore zeta here and I just know how she feels and what is really going on in the chapter. She's too proudto ever say anything, but the zeta house has a lot of issues, starting with their leadership, and it shows when members are too afraid to stand up to make a change. So yes, I actually do like and Zara about zeta. I just don't have any ties to them and can air their dirty laundry.
Whatever helps them wake up and realize it's time for a change!

I really hope that eventually we do add 4-5 more chapters.

Sororities that could do really well here:
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Omicron Pi

and also

Alpha Xi Delta
Delta Zeta

The rest might not be popular enough to support chapters here.

The first two have tried and failed on this campus. What makes you think they will be successful the second time around?

`1) Because AGD and AOPi are the two strongest sororities of that list. Both of them are strong in the SEC and would do well here with a clean start.

2) The fact that AGD and AOPi were here in the past means that they have alumnae who are Mizzou grads and would take an even more special and personal interest in getting involved and supporting the chapter so they could see them succeed succeed.

3) Just because a sorority has failed here in the past doesn't mean they can't come in and do well. Look at Sigma Kappa. They were here from 1968-1973 and then from 1990-2004 and reestablished in 2012 and are doing well.

4) Furthermore it has been over 20 years since AGD (1993) and AOPI (1994) disbanded. You shouldn't be holding that over their heads. That is more than enough time for them to have a fresh start. I'm not totally sure what the recruitment numbers were >20 years ago, but I would venture to guess that interest was a lot less back then. Interest in sorority recruitment has been increasing nationally as a whole, and that is the case too with us adding SK and Tri Sig in recent years.

5) If you look at where their chapters are located, AXiD and DZ are just not that strong at big schools like Mizzou. It's the same thing with Tri Sig and look how long it has been taking them to become stable.

We need 2 more houses, but I don't want a repeat of Tri Sig (smaller sorority coming in who is not that strong and has trouble recruiting).

With point #5, I'm not saying that AXiD and DZ don't have chapters in Missouri. All of these sororities have chapters in Missouri. But AGD and AOPi are organizations that, on a national scale, do better at larger schools that are more similar to Mizzou than AXiD and DZ, at least from what I have seen.

Sororities like AXiD and DZ are amazing and I'm NOT trying to take away from that, but a lot of their chapters are located at smaller schools, and that's exactly part of the problem that Tri Sigma is having to deal with (thankfully it seems that they are finally doing better, but I wouldn't call them totally stable yet).

I think the next couple of chapters that come in should be the ones who are more likely to succeed and I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that AGD and AOPi are the ones to do that here.

In the 90's recruitment numbers were low and going down and SO MANY chapters were closing from ALL of the Panhellenic Sororities.

That trend has since reversed and is increasing.

It doesn't seem reasonable to hold that against the chapters who had to close because recruitment numbers were just going down down down down at the time.

I would actually wait and see what the recruitment trends are like in the next 3-4 years. Even though the recruitment has increased over the last 10 years, like it did in the 80's, at the annual NIC meeting last Spring, it was noted that another "Rush Recession" may hit again in the 2020 decade like it did in the 90's.

You don't just add houses like putting new selections on a restaurant menu. If XYZ doesn't make quota year after year, it proves that some girls would rather not be Greek at all. You need every house consistently making quota or close to it, and bursting at the seams with membership to prove the campus is ready for one, much less 5! Otherwise, a new sorority will just take membership away from struggling XYZ, which will then close, and you are back where you started.

If XYZ is so unpopular, maybe it was a bad fit for the campus to begin with.

That's always a possibility too.

I totally believe this to be true, but I know for a fact a sorority on this campus will not prosper unless it has a house in Greek town (obviously excluding houses that are currently houseless due to constructing a new one). Greek town has no more space. If a new sorority were to come to campus the only feasible option would be to buy Richmond place and renovate it into a sorority or completely knock it down a construct a new house. The issue with that is I highly doubt the property owner would be willing to lose out on such a great investment unless there was ridiculous incentives to it. So in a dream world, if Richmond place were to be bought it would be sold for way more than its actual value so maybe like $7 million (don't quote me I'm just throwing out numbers) and then the cost to renovate a apartment complex to sorority with the standards of a sorority so think, $3-5 million and add the cost to furnish and it's a lot. So think about paying $12 million just for a renovated sorority house and I'm sure there are tons of administrative fees as far as adding a new chapter. And I'm going to guess most sorority nationals would be hesitant to throw money into installing a chapter with Mizzou's low enrollment.

This is a good point...but how would we solve this problem? Because I also agree with the posters saying that we need more sorority houses

Why do we "need" more sorority houses? Our rush has decreased since last year and we still have houses struggling to meet quota. Schools like ole miss with quotas as big as 160 and their "weakest" link is still thriving are places that need new houses. Mizzou has a good amount for now. Sigma needs to get more established first before we think about a new house.

I believe the campus could support more sororities. Additionally "Also" is correct the success of a new chapter will depend on a house. A strong national and local alum group could make that happen. The biggest impediment is going to be the Greek Life Office and PHC. Lots of red tape will need to be cut. This would be a terrific experience for someone to take on.

Good luck all !!

We are once again heading into a demographic dip. Soon the millennials will be beyond college age and the next generation is much smaller. Plus, the vast majority of girls who signed up for rush and didn't get a bid dropped out. They weren't eliminated by all the houses but rather opted to leave rush rather than pledge a house that was not to their liking. That's why quota was so much lower than in the past. I really doubt that it is a good time to add another house when our newest houses are not exactly thriving. Phi Mu, SK and Sigma still have a long way to go before they are on solid footing. And why would we add a house to accommodate PNMs who likely wouldn't choose those houses anyway and would just drop out the way they always do?
