is it time for a new sorority?
by: tigergirl
With all the talk of all the girls who were cut and/or dropped, is it time for a new chapter?
Chapters formerly at Mizzou:
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Omicron Pi
Delta Phi Epsilon
Phi Sigma Sigma
Theta Phi Alpha
Sigma Delta Tau
Sororities that haven't had chapters at Mizzou:
Alpha Sigma Alpha
Alpha Sigma Tau
Alpha Xi Delta
Delta Zeta
Could we support at least 5 more chapters?

Sigma has barely stayed afloat, they got a huge pledge class this year but now they have to continue to build on that.
Zeta is also struggling with the addition of SK. Zeta used to be considered a decent choice for bottom tier, and now that SK is here they have lost a lot of their PNMs to them. Zeta struggles with retention and has to COB multiple times a year just to stay at house total.
I think we need to evaluate our houses that need more support before adding new chapters. A new chapter would be either a death sentance to zeta or sigma, or a failure for the new house to flourish.

You don't just add houses like putting new selections on a restaurant menu. If XYZ doesn't make quota year after year, it proves that some girls would rather not be Greek at all. You need every house consistently making quota or close to it, and bursting at the seams with membership to prove the campus is ready for one, much less 5! Otherwise, a new sorority will just take membership away from struggling XYZ, which will then close, and you are back where you started.

I totally believe this to be true, but I know for a fact a sorority on this campus will not prosper unless it has a house in Greek town (obviously excluding houses that are currently houseless due to constructing a new one). Greek town has no more space. If a new sorority were to come to campus the only feasible option would be to buy Richmond place and renovate it into a sorority or completely knock it down a construct a new house. The issue with that is I highly doubt the property owner would be willing to lose out on such a great investment unless there was ridiculous incentives to it. So in a dream world, if Richmond place were to be bought it would be sold for way more than its actual value so maybe like $7 million (don't quote me I'm just throwing out numbers) and then the cost to renovate a apartment complex to sorority with the standards of a sorority so think, $3-5 million and add the cost to furnish and it's a lot. So think about paying $12 million just for a renovated sorority house and I'm sure there are tons of administrative fees as far as adding a new chapter. And I'm going to guess most sorority nationals would be hesitant to throw money into installing a chapter with Mizzou's low enrollment.

I believe the campus could support more sororities. Additionally "Also" is correct the success of a new chapter will depend on a house. A strong national and local alum group could make that happen. The biggest impediment is going to be the Greek Life Office and PHC. Lots of red tape will need to be cut. This would be a terrific experience for someone to take on.
Good luck all !!

We are once again heading into a demographic dip. Soon the millennials will be beyond college age and the next generation is much smaller. Plus, the vast majority of girls who signed up for rush and didn't get a bid dropped out. They weren't eliminated by all the houses but rather opted to leave rush rather than pledge a house that was not to their liking. That's why quota was so much lower than in the past. I really doubt that it is a good time to add another house when our newest houses are not exactly thriving. Phi Mu, SK and Sigma still have a long way to go before they are on solid footing. And why would we add a house to accommodate PNMs who likely wouldn't choose those houses anyway and would just drop out the way they always do?

Does every post today lead to someone taking a stab at Zeta? Someone is on a roll the last two days and it's so obvious.
