exactly what does it take?
by: OKAll during rush we were trying to figure out what it takes to be a Chi O or a PiPhi. They were cutting like crazy, including some St. Louis girls I know who had really good grades or who were really popular. We couldn't figure out exactly what they were looking for. We still don't know. Then when we saw their new members this morning we were blown away. It seems these two houses conduct recruitment absolutely on their own terms. But it sort of defies stereotyping. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy where I wound up and so is my roommate and other girls on the floor. We weren't surprised to see who went Gamma Phi or Theta or Alpha Phi or SK or Sigma or KD or whatever, but the other two.....

I thought their pledge classes were amazing, but that they defy stereotypes. They both found absolutely unique girls, and diverse, who will be a real asset to their house. I went to a huge high school and I guess the point i was trying to make is that they didn't take the girls I would have expected them to take (the pretty, popular girls) but instead took some beautiful, unique girls. They actually took only two from my high school, but another girl I know from church. I also heard they took a lot of out of state girls.

they are a diverse group. When you look around a high school cafeteria you see different groups sitting together. Nothing wrong with ANY group. Some groups have pretty girls. Some groups have jocky girls. Some groups have studious girls. Some groups have a total combo of the above. It's where you feel most comfortable and which group feels you connect. One of the reasons those groups are popular is because they draw a wide range of girls, not just the pretty, or jocky, or studious, or quiet girls --it's just a combo. Every other category just named is also competitive for that type. Just depends on what you feel comfortable with.

This is what happens when a sorority keeps an open mind. They aren't trying to get the prettiest girls or the smartest girls or the hottest girls or whatever. They are trying to get the best girls. and, once again, they've done it. I am not in either of these houses. I am in another house that is sometimes considered top tier and sometimes middle tier. But I have a huge amount of respect for PiPhi and ChiO houses because they simply don't compromise. They also have great sisterhoods. So whatever they're doing, it works. Kudos to them.

The thing is, it's easier for a house with a top 3 reputation to take diverse girls and be respected for it. If a middle tier house had taken those girls they would have been criticized for it -- especially for the girls more diverse looking. Maybe they can set the standard for what all houses look for.
