bid day

by: Momma

Do parents attend Bid Day? I just read an article that mentioned some sororities at other schools have parents wait at their daughters pref house. How does Mizzou do it? I really want to see my daughters face when she runs up :)

Yes you can attend!! You can go to stadium for bid openings and you can go stand outside house.. Girls will be busy with new sisters until late afternoon so can't really talk much with your daughter.

I wouldn't have my parents come to bid day. And for sure don't plan to meet with them until late in the day. By all means call them when you find out, but there is nothing more annoying than the small handful of parents hanging around trying to make this about them. You're in college and this is all about moving forward, making new friends, starting your new life and becoming independent. Parents need to understand that and just let go.

I had to be at the house last year to do an interview while everyone else was celebrating. A mother of a new member knocked on the door having driven from St. Louis to surprise her daughter. She just wanted to hang around until her daughter showed up. After all, it had been ONE WEEK since she had seen her. Much later everyone showed up and the daughter saw her mother and was shocked and SO UPSET. Tomorrow isn't about your parents, it's about new beginnings. Please, for everyone's sake, tell them not to come.

At Southern schools with larger rushes, it is totally common (and even odd) if parents don't come. They do have lunches for the parents at the houses...after all, never too soon to kiss up to the people writing the checks. Fair question if you know students south of the mason dixon line.

If and when sororities here decide to entertain parents on bid day, they will be welcome. Until then, Mizzou has traditions of its own that are perfectly fine, and don't involve parents.
