is it worth it

something has been bothering me lately and I wonder if anyone thinks about this...
Does anyone question the worth of a sorority especially when it comes to fundraising/philanthropies? If annual dues for a member (just in one pledge class) are around $2500-$3000 for the average house, that comes out to a total of about $200,000-$250,000 a year. Yet I saw that one one of the chapters with the biggest philanthropies had a fundraising goal of $111,000 for the year. It seems kind of backwards that we would be paying more to be in a sorority than we would actually be fundraising for the charity... And the sorority is actually making even more because it gets money from girls in each grade, not just new members. Does anyone get what I mean?? It almost seems wrong to pay so much to the local chapter and the National chapters when that money could be making such a huge difference somewhere. Thoughts??

I think the OP is forgetting a few things, such as what dues go for. A sorority house is a living unit just like a dorm. Those payments cover the room, a bed and dresser in the room, the cleaning of the bathrooms and public areas of the house, the salaries of the housemother, head cook, assistants and servers, the upkeep of the groups, the pacing of the parking lot etc. In addition, a sorority does not function in a vacuum. It is part of a national organization and as such dues also help pay for the officers, staff members and the actual building at national headquarters. Dues help pay for the colonization of news chapters so that the national organization continues to grow and thrive. It's not like a sorority is a for-profit organization, either. So if you would rather donate $3,000 a year to the charity of your choice and not be part of a sorority, go for it. But in my book you get a lot for your month, both in dues and in housing payments.

Lacking Logic explained it perfectly. Your dues don't just go toward being able to wear your letters. Your sorority house, just like any other home needs money to be kept up like utilities, maintenance, house keeping and property tax. You also pay for your food service and chef (some chapters give new members as many meals as in house girls and some chapters only give a certain amount per week to new members). You also pay for social events which are quite expensive (homecoming and greekweek). Then you have national dues which fund the national headquarters. The part of your dues that go toward philanthropy aren't actually directly used as donations, but used to fund events the members of chapter hold to raise money. We are very passionate about our philanthropies and we fundraise and donate as much as we literally can. Trust me your dues will be put in the best use.

Someone always has to try and find the bad In everything. If it weren't for people joining sororities these large donations to charity wouldn't be there in the first place. People join a sorority for a multitude of reasons, while charity is one of them it's not the only reason. The house, events, competitions, ect ect ect that these dues go to in order to make all these things possible are a huge part as to why people join. if these things were taken away and everyone's money just went to charity, first it would take away the whole point of even having sororities... And then no one would join and then no money at all could be raised for those causes.
