That's not really true. Recs are the best way to tell a chapter more about who you are. They can go into detail that the registration form can't. It's an opportunity to have a personal introduction from an alum who can talk about what really makes you special. And there are houses that won't take someone unless they have a rec. It is well worth the effort to get one or two for as many houses as possible. It is pretty much just the houseds who are desperate for new members who don't require recs.
