out of state girls!

by: No Worries

For so many girls coming from out of state and planning to go through recruitment it can be intimidating, but seriously, don't worry. Best advice is to stick with your gut and where you feel comfortable! Being from "out of state", and although there are a lot of girls from my state at Mizzou, my particular house did not have a lot, at all. Honestly never even thought about that until after recruitment, I just wanted to go through and meet people and like is said over and over, keep an open mind. The very best advice is to just go in and be yourself , believe in yourself, talk to the girls as you would in meeting anyone new-answer their questions and ask your own questions. Be curious, know that you are also deciding on where you will spend your next four years, so PLEASE don't try to go along with what other pichi groups or girls on your floor are saying. the house I ended up in was NOT on my list, I had no interest at first, got a few letters of recommendation, but had no interest in getting one for this particular house(because of what I heard). From day one it was always in my top 2. Don't worry if you like a house where there is a 'rumor'..or that it is all the st Louis girls, or northwest Chicago suburbs girls, just go with what you feel is right...DO NOT follow people from your high school or city. college is the time to do your own thing! Take every stereotype you see here on GR with a grain of salt-it's college, time to depend on yourself!

Totally agree! I came to Mizzou from the other side of the country without knowing anyone and had no connections. I remember a girl from STL in my Pi Chi group made so many nasty comments about certain chapters, but I didn't let her words sway me. I chose the chapter I felt most at home at... at the time, it was referred to as "bottom" and the other two at pref were mid and top. I was so nervous that I was going against the grain, but I trusted my gut because it was the only place I had cried and felt so comfortable consistently all week. It ended up being my dream sorority and I have grown so much because of my chapter and the women in it.

I honestly think there is an advantage to coming in from out of state. No one can judge you because they don't know anything about you yet! I would say that recommendations help, though I didn't have a rec for the chapter I pledged. For instance, I thought I had NO chance at Tri Delt but went through the entire week there, probably in part because I had strong recs. It wasn't the right chapter for me but I felt so special while I was there.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!! Recruitment is the best week ever!!

Some of us don't really consider being from Yankee town Chicago to be a good thing... 😕 Sorry

I am from out of state (no, not Chicago) and I thought going through rush was a breeze. No drama, mainly because I didn't know anyone. Not one person, either going through rush or already in a house. So I was judged me exclusively on my own merits, not someone else's opinion of me from high school. I got all of my top choices and had three great houses on the last day. I could have been happy in any of them. In my opinion, out of state girls have an advantage, actually.
