overwhelmed by recruitment

by:

After over half a year of my older sister trying to convince me to go through recruitment, I finally decided that joining a sorority would be a worthwhile experience for me so I signed up (yay). Within the last 2 months I've been looking into Mizzou and all the sororities here to base my decision on whether to rush or not. I found instagrams and tumblrs of every chapter filled will pictures of fun, pretty girls. I even looked into all of your philanthropies and I'm just so impressed what you all do. I am an extremely open minded person, which makes decision making a little difficult for me. At the time and moment I honestly could say I would love a bid from any chapter. Is it easy to narrow your chapters down? Are the conversations super nerve racking? Will people be hardcore judging my outfits? Is making friends during rush easy? Are non-Greeks friendly to Greeks? My older sister an Alabama Pi Phi so she couldn't necessarily advise me because recruitment at different schools vary a bit apparently. Oh boy, this is a lot, but I'm excited. MIZ

I'm so glad you decided to rush, I love your attitude!
1. I found it pretty easy to narrow down houses, especially once we got to philanthropy round. I think you'll be able to see who you click with and who you don't!
2. I was super nervous going into my first house and left it completely relieved! The conversations usually went pretty easily because there are so many questions to ask and you'll be a pro at talking to strangers by the end. The actives want to get to know you and they know how nervous you are so they'll try their best to carry the conversation.
3. Honestly I don't think so, the more important thing is how you carry yourself and if you tried to look nice. Show off your personal style and don't try to be someone you are not!
4. I think it is! I still talk to the girls I stood next to in line in my Pi chi group. Everyone is looking for friends at the beginning of the year so don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and talk to people.
5. Non Greeks and Greeks definitely get along at Mizzou, I have a lot of non Greek friends from my dorm.

Good luck, I'm excited for you!

I can assure you that I am not reinventing the wheel with anything I might say, but having gone through recruitment at Mizzou as a PNM and active, I understand how it can be overwhelming. I'd be lying if I said that recruitment here is a cake walk. The days are long and can be very emotionally charged if you don't go in with an open mind. That said, it seems like you have a great attitude. The girls who come through acting that they are God's gift to earth are usually the ones who end up facing heavy cuts. If you are confident, have good grades, look your best, and have genuine conversations, you will be just fine. Although it might not seem this way now, you WILL remember the houses/girls/conversations - especially if you have been "researching" ahead of time. My BIGGEST piece of suggestion is to take each day one step at a time and enjoy yourself. If you do that, you will find the right place for you. Good luck!

One other thing to note: most girls will face cuts during one round or another and it can feel personal at the time. It might sting at first, but I promise you will look back and realize that that house was not the place for you for one reason or another.
