legacy question

by:

I am a legacy to what most people think is a terrific house (Kappa). My mother was a Kappa, as was her mother -- though neither were on this campus. I know all about how there is no guarantee that just because I am a legacy that they will be interested. But how does it work in reverse? What if I don't like the house? I have been told that if I absolutely can't see myself in that house that I shouldn't go back on pref day (if I am invited, obviously) because then I would have to be towards the top of their bid list and it sends a message that I really want that house. But if I don't, is it better to go back on pref day and just list them second, or to not go back? Or should I suicide the other house? HELP!!!!!!!!!! I know it all depends on how things work out and how I feel while going through rush, but I want to go into this understanding how it works and not get caught up in the emotions.

I would treat them just like any other house. If you find you can't see yourself in that house, then don't go back. And while I can't speak for Kappa, in my house if you are a legacy who makes it all the way through, we would put you in the top half of our bid list.

I faced this same situation. I wasn't sure my legacy house would be a good fit, but I didn't want to cut them so I went there on the last day. I had three good choices and could have been happy with any of them, but my legacy house was my least fave so I listed them third. I got it anyway. I wasn't disappointed but I was sort of surprised. As it turned out I love my house and have made great friends. Plus there's the family connection. But I think I would have been a little bit better fit in at least one of the other two. I think this shows that where the houses rate you on the last day takes precedence over how you rank them. It will be interesting to see rush from the other side this year.

I had a really hard time with the house I am was a legacy at, because I didn't know if I really wanted it, or if I was keeping it because of my sister and mom, and the memories I had at the house when I was little. I ended up putting the house second on pref day, and ended up getting my first choice! I wouldn't have done anything different! Yes, I probably let my emotions play a little more in the decision, but in the end it worked out like it was suppose to! It was really hard for me to decide if I really wanted the legacy house, but looking back on recruitment, I am glad I didn't get a bid from them, because I honestly don't think i would have fit in as well as I do in my house. Do whatever you feel is right! Go with your gut!
