retention

by: Well

Remember, many factors play in to retention and retention problems. The University is currently under a time of great change in regard to enrollment, etc and although initially stated they would not raise out of state tuition, they recently announced that they would, in fact, raise out of state tuition. Some of our houses here, as repeatedly stated, are made up of a majority of Missouri residents, there are houses that are heavily populated with St Louis, Kc, etc girls. Other houses take in more out of state girls. Like experienced in the general population of Mizzou students, many decided not to return after first semester and some chose to finish out the year but will not be returning for the 16-17 year. There are SEVERAL houses that lost A LOT of girls, even from their most recent pledge class. Other houses decided to make some changes and really start addressing issues/behaviors, so good for them. There are some houses that year after year have a difficult time holding on to girls, and yes, that's part of a bigger problem. But this past year has seen many changes, and as stated, when someone is paying $20,000+ a year more than Missouri residents with no relief in site, there will continue to be many transfers and less out of state students attending.

Why would anyone pay 20K to go to mizzou in the first place? Blows my mind

I pay out of state tuition to attend Mizzou because I love it here. The campus is gorgeous, the people are nice, and I have a lot of opportunities to be involved and successful. I didn't want to stay in my home state and out of state tuition is expensive everywhere but Mizzou gave me a pretty good scholarship. My siblings all went out of state too and had to pay even higher tuition.
From what I've read online my tuition will only go up about 600 dollars which really isn't a huge deal for me.

Mizzou's out-of-state tuition is still cheaper than Iowa, Indiana, Georgia, Minnesota, North Dakota, Pitt, Wisconsin, Texas....so I don't really understand your point. Education isn't cheap. And Mizzou's OOS tuition remains a real bargain compared to private schools, some of which grant degrees that aren't worth the paper they are printed on. And don't get me started on for-profit colleges -- the biggest educational ripoff in the world

I don't know anyone who has ever paid out of state tuition all four years, do you? It's so easy to become a resident that most out of state people just do that. Have you ever been around Columbia in summer? It's amazing! A bunch of chill people from all over the country working at part-time jobs and hanging out -- saving their parents $20,000/year.

There are many, many reasons out-of-staters would want to attend Mizzou. And the slight increase in out-of-state tuition certainly isn't enough to discourage most of them. Plus, Missouri is extremely lenient about allowing students to establish residency so by junior and senior year many out-of-state students have qualified for in-state tuition. So, nice try. But the houses with retention issues usually have other issues as well that have absolutely nothing to do with a tuition increase. By the way, if money were really a factor, out-of state students would have stayed in their own state to go to school rioght from the beginning.

That's a poor argument, she's saying now that the rep has taken a hit they're going to be less inclined to pay the tuition. We already know this to be true, enrolment has gone down.

Tell me specifically which academic program that attracted out of state students is no longer as highly regarded. Do you really think the accounting program isn't as good because students protested? Do you really think the nation's #1 journalism program is no longer attracting quality faculty or recruiters? Are you telling us that people no longer want to get into a well-respected nursing school just because the OP disagrees with a political agenda? And do you you really think that people are so stupid that they are not aware that when they transfer they usually have to attend the new school for at least a semester or two longer to gain specific credits at that school, thereby negating any savings from the slight Mizzou tuition increase. Do you actually THINK with that brain, Well, or do you just repeat verbatim what your right-wing parents tell you?

I'm not saying programs aren't as good and those more prestigious programs are probably least likely to take a hit - however, the majority of the population is based on students attending regular liberal arts programs you could do anywhere. I'm not anti mizzou but it's a fact that enrolment has dropped, im not sure why you'd bother arguing that.

There is someone on this website who really has it in for people who are majoring in fields within the liberal arts designation. This makes me angry. It's as if they are lumping every major into one category. I am here to tell you that physics majors are very different from history majors, just as math majors are different from sociology majors. All have different plans and goals. So unless you know a bit more about the liberal arts, perhaps you should refrain from generalizing and insulting such a diverse group of students.
