i don't get it

by:

I'm not trying to be overly critical of Alpha Phi, but I do find myself wondering about some things. Alpha Phi is one of the older sororities on this campus. It has been around longer than the newcomers -- SK, Sigma, PhiMu, KD -- of course. But since it was established here in 1910 it also actually has been around longer than some extremely well-established houses like ADPi (1915), TriDelt (1915), Gamma Phi (1921) and Alpha Chi Omega (1922). So why does a house with such a rich history have such low standards? They struggle at retention, they have grades that are below the all-sorority average (especially for new members) and their actual physical house just isn't on the same level as some of the sororities mentioned above. Is it lack of support from nationals? Is it a bad alumni network? Is loyalty lacking after graduation? I would love to know how it got into this situation.

Houses with same or LESS

Tri delt, a chi o, dg, zeta, KD, phi MU,

Gpa of 3.253 is higher than 32 frats at Missouri
Please go attack the frat boys lol

Same or less than what? I don't think we're talking about specific gpa's here (although that 2.9 sure was a black mark). We're talking about the entire house and its standing on campus. And if you expect to win points, Alpha Phi, by noting that your gpa is better than a bunch of fraternities, well, that's pretty pathetic. There are about two fraternities worth joining on this campus and the rest are an embarrassment. Most fraternities here are where immature losers go to feel good about themselves.

It's honestly embarrassing For them to be here since 1910 and still be considered part of the bottom tier.... like damn what went so wrong with this chapter here?!??!

I think if there is one thing the last few weeks have showed us, it is why they have the retention problem they do. This catty and defensive attitude along with pulling in and criticizing other houses paints a perfect picture of what goes on behind closed doors. People have always wondered why alpha phi and zeta have poor grades and poor retention when by all 'appearances' it seems they are a good house. With what everyone has witnessed happening on these boards, I don't think much more of an explanation is needed. Not even zeta was ever this catty. What is working for other houses is they acknowledge the problems they have and they address them, not defend them. Alphaphi will continue to get girls that are desperate to be part of any house, not part of the greek system and sisterhood. They will then continue to lose those girls. I think the difference this year is zeta will be alpha phis biggest competition and predict zeta is going to pull the decent girls alpha phi used to get.

the face of many houses change over time. One or two unsuccessful pledge classes lead to similar probably less committed classes being selected by the upperclassmen that were not a great pledge class. This happened to my brothers frat house ( not a MU) and he ended up dropping. I blame him though because of his own personal issues he became less involved and didn't have an active role in choosing the pledges. The lesson is that the sisters in the house need to always keep the goals and principles of their house in mind and work hard not to let "risks" through the cracks. This includes grades/ hidden addictions/ bad behavior etc. New members can really effect the image and the status of a house. Just look at all the grief Tridelt received on this website after fall 2015.

Clearly the current leadership has taken them down a terrible path. If the idea really was to 'get their name out there' it has backfired. While people used to 'wonder' what their issue was concerning retention and bad grades, they have now put 'their type of girl' all over these boards. I don't believe for a minute anyone was 'setting them up' because Alpha Phi was never a threat to any house. Numbers don't lie, there are real problems here and if it is true they were told to be all over these boards someone really needs to step in because their always 'shaky' standing has really taken a turn for the worse. Hope they can pull it together.

There's an opportunity in August for Alpha Phi. They have the chance to attract a different type of girl. Other houses on this campus have done it and it works. In the past Theta rushed to get prettier girls, TriDelt rushed to get girls who were more well-rounded and involved and AXO rushed to get girls who were more involved and outgoing. When your reputation has taken a hit the way Alpha Phi's has, it's time for a makeover. It can start by instituting a grade cutoff and it can end with choosing girls who have more to offer than just looks. If they don't do something about their reputation, they run the risk of being a permanent joke in greektown and forever known has the house that had the chance to do something to improve but still kept taking the same old superficial girls.

Don't you think maybe they're happy with their reputation? Those girls love each other and have a blast together, they aren't going to change based on BS said on this irrelevant website.

When you have a great GPA I'm not sure in what world any other persons GPA matters to you, as long as they're happy with it and passing. A 3.4 is the same as a 2.4 (or whatever it takes to graduate) at the end of the day. Knowing I have the most caring genuine loyal sisters is my priority, not their grades. They're happy, my house is happy, no reason not to be.

If they were that caring and that loyal, they'd stick around a bit longer and not drop/flunk out. Just sayin'.

Alpha Phi has been trying all night to bury this post, but it's worth seeing. They have a chance to cjhange their priorities and do something positive to improve their reputation and attract girls who are more likely to make grades and stay in school. Let's hope they do it.

Let's see what happens. Maybe they will get their act together.

Maybe they don't WANT to! Maybe they're happy to have nice genuine girls?? Did you think of that? Maybe the .2 difference in GPA just doesn't upset them the way you wish it would. Maybe they will try to change, I have no idea but I wouldn't recommend it, I think they're great how they are, I love my Aphi friends and I can understand why they're proud of their house. Do you not realize that obsessing over .2 GPA is just as shallow as obsessing over looks? Sororities are about sisterhood. Maybe that's too much for a GDI to comprehend. Actives on campus give them nothing but support, maybe you'd feel differently if you actually knew them.

Wont deny there are some nice, genuine girls. But overall there are a lot of very cliquey, catty girls. What is their image? What are they known for? Those are the things they need to figure out. As someone else mentioned, they are going to have a lot of competition from houses that were NEVER competition for them before. Their 'type' will definitely be looking at a few others before aphi-why would anyone want to leave high school to walk right back in to high school drama?

Every house has nice, genuine girls (though lately it seems Alpha Phi has fewer of them than we thought). That's hardly a selling point. And it's so much more than the below-sorority-average gpa. It is the fact that they were arguably the best house that participated in spring rush and yet they were so lazy that they didn't even make the effort to find the best PNMs possible. Out of all the quality girls who would have loved to pledge, they found a group that could only muster a 2.9 gpa. A 2.9!!!!!!!!!! I've never seen a house gpa that low. So it's about the effort they put into choosing their members -- or lack thereof. They are the type of house that just gets by with the minimum, and that's not the kind of house that the outstanding girls who go through rush want to join.

Lmao you think they've lost status over GR and are gonna suffer over things that have been said on here? It doesn't work like that. Their grades and their retention is same as ever so they're in the same place as they were before. Take GR less seriously will you?

THIS is the post Alpha Phi is trying to bury. Well. Nice try. But we know the truth. You have problems and you are trying to hide them, just like you are trying to hide this post. I hope PNMs keep this in mind: that Alpha Phi would rather hide their problems than deal with them.

Alpha Phi has been in overdrive again today, calling people names and posting nonsense about traveling to Mexico and attending all-white schools. This is NOT the way a successful house acts. PNMs beware. APhi def has a lunatic fringe.
