You're right hazing does happen. However, the majority of fraternities are aware of all the national media coverage of fraternity hazing. That awareness considerably reduces the chance of ending up in a hospital. Mizzou's offices of Greek Life and Student Conduct run a pretty tight ship, as does the InterFraternity Council; and the three do a pretty good job of keeping tabs on hazing. Greeks generally know that hazing has been a factor in some houses being kicked off campus so try to lower the risk of being kicked off. Go ahead and look at all the fraternities generally considered to be in the top tier. They tend to realize that they have little to gain by heavy hazing. Some one may tell you that one or more of the top houses haze hard and heavy, but that isn't really the case as such allegations are often made out of jealousy and as a dirty rush tactic.

If a fraternity expects you to take a beating and practically drink yourself to death, have a little self-respect. Don't do it. There are far too many fraternities on this campus and they are desperate to fill their houses. If you refuse to go through with their childish rituals, they probably aren't going to kick you out because they need your $$$. I refused to join a house that hazes and I am very happy with my choice. They only get away with it because stupid members think it makes them a man. Well, it doesn't.

At Mizzou, or any other big school, the top houses are going to haze the hardest. That's the reason they are on top, hazing weeds out the boys from the men. pledgeship in a top house isn't too bad, like said before: a lot of physical exercise, cleaning, laundry, driving, buyin actives stuff. I won't give away the fun parts ;)
