why you should join a bottom tier house
by: PLEASE READ
Hey PNM's!
Many of you (myself included) come in thinking "there's no way I'll ever join Alpha Alpha Alpha!"
Well that attitude typically gets you cut from ALL houses. So take this message as a warning and a piece of advice :)
1. There are 4 bottom tier houses (if you consider KD mid tier which most people do that leaves SK, Sigma, Phi Mu, and zeta in bottom) You are seriously limiting yourself if you write these houses off! that gives you only 11 houses to try and join! If quota stays at 85.. that means only 935/1275 of you will be greek! That's only a 73% chance you will get into a house that's not bottom tier!
2. Just because enrollment is down doesn't mean recruitment numbers will be down. Quota will most likely be lower which means the competition will be just as rough. So please don't go in thinking it will be easier to get into a higher ranked house
3. BE THE DIFFERENCE YOU WANT TO SEE IN A CHAPTER! Our bottom tier chapters have so much potential to be great! If you fit into a lower tier house but are worried about "tier" and status - don't! You could be a great leader that initiates the change for the better for your house! APhi and AXO were once bottom tier houses too, and look where they are now! All because they WANTED to make themselves better! Give bottom tier a chance, YOU can make all the difference!

Lastly, I want to talk you all about the positives and potential each bottom tier house has to offer.
SK: they're already at the top of bottom tier! The rock at competitions and want to be leaders on campus. They are sweet girls that are very friendly and outgoing. I don't know a single person that would say a negative thing about this house! It's only a matter of time before this house becomes established and strong!
Phi Mu: this house has made huge strides! They also take competitions seriously and want to be known as an "involved" house. They are known for a close sisterhood and their reputation is "the sweethearts of greek life."
Zeta: they have SO much potential! they may be the only established/older house in bottom tier and that may concern some people, but don't let it! These girls take pride on having fun and cute. Their grades have improved also! If you join this house you can help improve their relations on campus with other houses and help them gain some respect!
Sigma: This house started so strong! They need some quality girls that will give their all to get them back on track! The are low key and very accepting :) Just need some TLC!! If you're a smart bubbly girl you could easily become a leader in this house and start making some steps towards improvement in retention!

Excellent post. Even though I would put APhi in the bottom tier instead of Zeta, what you have said otherwise is 100%. I also would like to add that being Greek is a great way to go through your 4 years here and is a great way to make lasting friends. Being a new member is amazing, as is living in the house. But having a group of friends to live with junior and senior year (and even beyond) when you move on to apartment life helps make it all worthwhile.

For some PNMs, they have no desire to join a "top tier" house because of the stereotypes they carry. They would rather be who they are and be comfortable in their own skin with people they genuinely like to be with, rather than trying hard to be something they are not with people they really don't like at all.
My advice to potential PNMs - don't buy into the "tier system" as a way to evaluate which houses are right for you - go with your heart and chose the sorority where you feel the most at "home" and join the sisterhood that make you feel good about yourself, because that will end up being your family for the next 4 years.

Here's the thing - if you go through recruitment aiming to only join a top tier house, you're either going to join a house for the wrong reasons, or you're going to be disappointed. Recruitment shouldn't be about social status, it should be about where you fit in. Some girls fit in at Chi O, others fit in at Phi Mu. It doesn't make one wrong. What matters isn't which house has the highest return rates, best tumblr, or is "hottest", but which house YOU feel at home in.
The thing about top tier houses is that they're good recruiters. They are good at making almost EVERYONE feel like they would fit in. However, after recruitment you'll see that those houses you may have thought you were meant to be in on the first day of recruitment would not feel so homey if you were actually in them. The top tier houses make everyone feel like they'd fit in, and then choose the girls who would actually fit in (and are top because they don't have to worry much about losing them). I thought I LOVED pi phi on the first two days of recruitment. Eventually they dropped me, and now looking at the Pi Phi's I truly know, I am certain that I wouldn't feel at home there - they're great, but it wouldn't be home. And while I didn't see that during recruitment, Pi Phi did, and wisely dropped me. That allowed me to join a house that is truly my home.
Don't go in to recruitment looking to join a top tier house, go in to it looking to find sisters, and that's what you'll find
