why you should join a bottom tier house

by:

Hey PNM's!
Many of you (myself included) come in thinking "there's no way I'll ever join Alpha Alpha Alpha!"
Well that attitude typically gets you cut from ALL houses. So take this message as a warning and a piece of advice :)

1. There are 4 bottom tier houses (if you consider KD mid tier which most people do that leaves SK, Sigma, Phi Mu, and zeta in bottom) You are seriously limiting yourself if you write these houses off! that gives you only 11 houses to try and join! If quota stays at 85.. that means only 935/1275 of you will be greek! That's only a 73% chance you will get into a house that's not bottom tier!

2. Just because enrollment is down doesn't mean recruitment numbers will be down. Quota will most likely be lower which means the competition will be just as rough. So please don't go in thinking it will be easier to get into a higher ranked house

3. BE THE DIFFERENCE YOU WANT TO SEE IN A CHAPTER! Our bottom tier chapters have so much potential to be great! If you fit into a lower tier house but are worried about "tier" and status - don't! You could be a great leader that initiates the change for the better for your house! APhi and AXO were once bottom tier houses too, and look where they are now! All because they WANTED to make themselves better! Give bottom tier a chance, YOU can make all the difference!

Lastly, I want to talk you all about the positives and potential each bottom tier house has to offer.

SK: they're already at the top of bottom tier! The rock at competitions and want to be leaders on campus. They are sweet girls that are very friendly and outgoing. I don't know a single person that would say a negative thing about this house! It's only a matter of time before this house becomes established and strong!

Phi Mu: this house has made huge strides! They also take competitions seriously and want to be known as an "involved" house. They are known for a close sisterhood and their reputation is "the sweethearts of greek life."

Zeta: they have SO much potential! they may be the only established/older house in bottom tier and that may concern some people, but don't let it! These girls take pride on having fun and cute. Their grades have improved also! If you join this house you can help improve their relations on campus with other houses and help them gain some respect!

Sigma: This house started so strong! They need some quality girls that will give their all to get them back on track! The are low key and very accepting :) Just need some TLC!! If you're a smart bubbly girl you could easily become a leader in this house and start making some steps towards improvement in retention!

Phi Mu > SK what are you smoking. Only SK thinks they're anything special

Eh, Phi Mu and SK are about neck and neck. It goes either way depending on whether girls prefer to join an established house with history and a reputation (Phi Mu) or if the idea of joining something new with potential for immediate leadership is more their speed (SK). Personally I think Phi Mu has the slight edge this year because of their showing in competitions but that's just me.

I'm just not sure why we're pretending that Zeta isn't top of the bottom tier. We all hate them. I know we do. But they get the best of the bottom, then SK and Phi Mu duke it out for the next best, then Sigma tries to cobble together a PC out of whoever is left and desperate enough to join.

Excellent post. Even though I would put APhi in the bottom tier instead of Zeta, what you have said otherwise is 100%. I also would like to add that being Greek is a great way to go through your 4 years here and is a great way to make lasting friends. Being a new member is amazing, as is living in the house. But having a group of friends to live with junior and senior year (and even beyond) when you move on to apartment life helps make it all worthwhile.

unfortunately, APhi is higher ranked than zeta at this point despite grades. Zeta was 10/15 for grades so not doing much better than zeta. Aphi is much more respected/popular/social on campus which puts them in mid tier.
zeta has been stagnant in bottom tier because of sisterhood/attitude/respect issues on campus. They also aren't involved or have the grades to compete with mid tier houses. just being honest.

I agree. Alpha phi should be included in this, along with zeta. They are both bottom.

Great message but KD is bottom, every niche has a bottom and KD does bottom of academics perfectly. Bottom tier every time

KD is a toss up. Some people see them as last spot of mid tier, others see them as top of bottom tier.
It depends what you value more, grades and involvement or being social and attractive. Either way, they're still better than the rest of the houses the OP listed.

Pretty sure no one sees it that way except maybe KDs...

Keep in mind that the "tier rankings" are perpetuated by a bunch of insecure girls and sleazy frat boys who insist on rating/critiquing everyone else to make themselves feel better about their miserable lives.

Going into recruitment i wrote off bottom tier houses and ended up joining one: best decision ever. In reality, GOOD panhellenic women have friends and respect girls in every chapter. There isnt a wrong decision, or a '"bad house".

For some PNMs, they have no desire to join a "top tier" house because of the stereotypes they carry. They would rather be who they are and be comfortable in their own skin with people they genuinely like to be with, rather than trying hard to be something they are not with people they really don't like at all.

My advice to potential PNMs - don't buy into the "tier system" as a way to evaluate which houses are right for you - go with your heart and chose the sorority where you feel the most at "home" and join the sisterhood that make you feel good about yourself, because that will end up being your family for the next 4 years.

Wait just a minute! Who says people in top tier houses are "trying hard to be something they are not with people they really don't like at all." Clearly you don't know what you are talking about. The sisterhoods of top tier houses are just as good, the members are just as kind and supportive and the girls are just as sincere. The only difference is that they are a bit more selective during rush than other houses. But someone (above) who admits she is not a member of a top tier house has no credibility to judge what goes on in those houses. Especially since she probably saw the inside of one for one brief shining moment during rush, and that's it. You should know better.

XO and Pi Phi are our top houses and they honestly are not very pretty. We don't have much of a looks based tier system

by: How does it feel?!

All of a sudden all the "top tier" houses are taking offense to someone calling them out, because they put on a great "show" during recruitment, and the their new members find out things REALLY are.

If being in a "top tier" house means being something/someone I'm not, then no thank you.

But it gets old hearing bottom houses talk about how real and genuine they are and how mean and superficial top houses are. Bottom houses often have LOUSY sisterhood, either because they're struggling and everybody's too stressed out to focus on relationships or because there are divisions between the pretty/social girls who are trying to help the chapter move up and the stereotypical unattractive/awkward girls.

Here's the thing - if you go through recruitment aiming to only join a top tier house, you're either going to join a house for the wrong reasons, or you're going to be disappointed. Recruitment shouldn't be about social status, it should be about where you fit in. Some girls fit in at Chi O, others fit in at Phi Mu. It doesn't make one wrong. What matters isn't which house has the highest return rates, best tumblr, or is "hottest", but which house YOU feel at home in.
The thing about top tier houses is that they're good recruiters. They are good at making almost EVERYONE feel like they would fit in. However, after recruitment you'll see that those houses you may have thought you were meant to be in on the first day of recruitment would not feel so homey if you were actually in them. The top tier houses make everyone feel like they'd fit in, and then choose the girls who would actually fit in (and are top because they don't have to worry much about losing them). I thought I LOVED pi phi on the first two days of recruitment. Eventually they dropped me, and now looking at the Pi Phi's I truly know, I am certain that I wouldn't feel at home there - they're great, but it wouldn't be home. And while I didn't see that during recruitment, Pi Phi did, and wisely dropped me. That allowed me to join a house that is truly my home.
Don't go in to recruitment looking to join a top tier house, go in to it looking to find sisters, and that's what you'll find

This is the most accurate description and advice!!!! Ones- don't let it hurt your feelings if a house you like drops you. You will find your true home.
