good idea

There is a movement afoot by three of Mizzou's most respected houses to reduce quota this year. Their thinking is that the current pledge class sizes are just too big. Not everyone can live in the house when pledge classes are that big and you can't even get to know everyone who technically is your sister. But these houses are all on very firm financial footing, rarely have girls drop and have a strong national and local alumni network to help keep their houses up to date. They have money to burn. Many other houses are hoping quota will stay the same to help support their house, in part because they are some of the newer/'weaker houses on campus without as strong an alumni network. so what do you think this is the year the formula should be changed and/or quota reduced?

Three houses at Mizzou are never going to get the system changed. Panhellenic follows RFM, release figures methodology. This is a set system (created by the National Panhellenic Conference, which all Mizzou panhellenic sororities are a part of) that determines the number of girls each house has to cut each day and ultimately, quota. Quota is decided without input from the sororities, so you can't just "make quota smaller". It's simply not possible. RFM is designed to match as many PNMs to houses as possible while allowing all chapters to meet quota and be stable, and it works. If you would like to learn more you can go to this link www.npcwomen.org/resources/pdf/RFM%20Update.pdf
Bottom line, RFM and quota are completely out of our hands. This "movement" is bound to fail, and likely doesn't even exist. Even if it did, in order for RFM to change it would have to be many sororities taking issue with it on a national level - the collegiate chapters at Mizzou has no power.

From what I understand, that's not exactly true. Just ask PHC at Indiana University. Not all university PanHels subscribe to this method and the three houses here that are encouraging leaving the system and determining quota on their own are among the oldest and strongest houses on this campus. Money talks and they are putting their money where their mouth is. It might not happen this year, but if quota doesn't get reduced one way or another, these three (and three others who are almost on board) will make it happen eventually. The problem is that they are finding that loyalty to a chapter is greatly reduced if you can't live in the house. And the entire national depends on that loyalty.

no. Indian University doesn't follow RFM. Mizzou does. That's why IU does it differently and determine quota on their own. At Mizzou, you don't just get to determine quota on your own. You send in your bid lists, PNM's fill out the MRABA, and you receive a list of the girls you matched with which is dependent on campus's total. You don't get to say "We want our quota to be XYZ".

For now. Word to the wise: never underestimate the power of Mizzou's top sororities. They are what makes Mizzou the envy of Greek Life around the nation.

Actually does use RFM, albeit a special-snowflake version that NPC came up with just for them. Hopefully, though, they'll move to quota and total soon.

Until lol liar delivered her little sililoquy tellomg us all how stupid we were, I was going to reply that I agree pledge classes are much too large. I remember meeting a girl in my geology lecture at the beginning of second semester and I thought she was great. Imagine my surprise when she started talking about the house and what fun it would be to move in the next year. I didn't even know she was in my pledge class! It's my fault because I'm not very observant and she remembered me, but, still, if the size was more manageable that never would have happened.

Pledge classes are probably gonna be smaller anyway with enrollment down, at least we don't have Alabama sized chapters.
And with housing maybe we are just due for some expansions, we have a lot to live up to looking at other SEC mansions.

The max chapter total at Bama is 392 members. And while their houses may be bigger than ours, I can't say they're prettier. My sister goes there and I have been inside 4-5 chapter houses. None are as beautiful/historical as Mizzou's PiPhi or ADPi houses, as quaint as AXOs or as classic as Kappas.

Pledge classes at Bama, USC (carolina), and many other southern schools is 120 or more. Quota at Mizzou was 85, which pales in comparison. Our pledge classes are far from the largest in the country - there will be no "reducing quota"

Quota has nothing to do with other schools and everything to do with the number of girls still standing on the last day of rush. Last year 2,300+ girls pledged at Bama, not nearly the number as at Mizzou, which is why their pledge classes were larger. But it's irrelevant because while the formula might be the same, the numbers that are plugged into the formula are very different. If fewer girls go through rush I can assure you that quotas will be smaller. And if these houses have their way, pledges classes might be smaller yet. I've heard not more than 75. We'll see.

Which houses want to change it?

This would kill houses like sigma and zeta who struggle to meet quota. Panhel would never go for it.

Wouldn't it HELP the houses who can't meet a quota of 85 girls? And if the best houses are taking fewer, aren't there more girls to go around? It's time for the SKs and Sigmas of the world to rise to the occasion. Either they can run with the big dogs and make quota or they can't. And if they can't, they should leave.

All houses made quota last year. The year before that, Sigma was the only house that didn't. And SK has made quota every year since they came back. Zeta, Phi Mu, SK, KD, APhi, none of the lower tier houses struggle to make quota except Sigma. Doesn't mean they don't have retention problems, but they're not "struggling to make quota"

Look at their numbers now. They may have made quota last August, but they sure lost a lot of girls since then and will be hoping to get more girls than ever during rush.
