bid day videos

by:

Interesting to watch the Bid Day 2015 videos! Some were so fun and some were so.. trying? Pan Hel should make it mandatory that all sororities do bid day vidoes-or can't. and the same goes for recruitment-either everyone does them or no one. What a great display of a universities greek life-personally feel that pan hel should 'ask' for it from all houses..Despite budget-you can tell which girls are having a blast and which girls are staging it. Only highlighting certain members says a lot about a house- capturing the entire day is what it all should be about.

So true as soon as you click on ADPi's video you can completely tell the difference between Aphi and gphi who look like they're having a blast and ADPi who seem to be struggling for content. I didn't find XO seemed to be having too much fun either which was surprising

i think some of that has to do with aphi and gphi hiring professionals to film and edit theirs

I think most hired someone to film and edit-actually they all were definitely edited. But I think what people are referring to is the genuine excitement captured in the videos. There is way too much going on that day, people can't 'act'. Now recruitment videos can definitely be staged, but the bid day videos are just about capturing the highlights, theme and excitement of the day.

I don't think acting was the right word to use, of course everyone is super excited and when I watched the aphi and gphi videos I was like "wow this is awesome". I just don't think it's a completely accurate way to judge how happy a house and new members are, like the girl above said: everyone shows excitement differently and editing/music choice/what they chose to film can effect how it comes across on video.

Interesting that the best bid day videos come from houses usually criticized for being 'pretty party" houses. Perhaps the girls who are chosen/ go to these houses have a more fun personality. I think their girls are outgoing and fun loving and it shows in how they react to their new sisters.

Yes. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the professional videographer giving them direction, posing them and telling them what to do. I'm sure it's just because they're all such FUN GALS.

You are incredibly jealous, aren't you? there is absolutely no way a videographer can 'pose' the excitement you are seeing in many of those videos. It is spontaneous and fun. Do you really think the excitement of the new recruits is staged?! Girls running down the street, so excited-oh, wait-everyone stop and let's do this again. Get back to the stadium so I can get a different shot of you running up to your house. And even though you were crying in what we can see is genuine excitement, let me get you to cry and look this way while hugging that person over there. I'm sorry your house has one of the videos that didn't look like you all were having too much fun. Oh, and can you tell me which houses did not have their videos edited?

Lol to "okay no". Do you really believe a videographer gives them direction, poses them and tells them what to do. First off, highly unlikely that any pnm would even know a videographer would be there as they no one even knows what house they are in until bid day. Are you thinking they pull all the new members aside and hand them a script? If it were staged you would definitely be able to tell. And I am as curious as the other person who asked: What house did NOT use someone to film and edit their bid day??

You can definitely tell which houses had a member film and edit (it'll have things like go pro shots) and which had professionals, no you can't fake the new members excitement but the videographer can definitely direct them to fake looking fun and exciting when it's just the actives (which is what most of these videos are made out of). EVERYONE acts somewhat fake during these types of things because it's hard to be natural in front of a camera but a professional is a lot better at making it look real.

^ Are you kidding?? Do you really BELIEVE a videographer told new members to act excited. OMG talk about jealous.
So please answer the question then-which houses had a member film? You are wrong there-hiring a 'friend' who is majoring in that area doesn't count. But please do tell, WHICH houses, specifically, filmed their own?

Definitely said the videographer can direct them to look more excited when it's the ACTIVES, but even if I was a new member and I saw a nice professional camera pointed at me I'm gonna act super excited. I'm gonna say everyone but gphi, aphi, and theta filmed their own without a professional. There isn't anything wrong with hiring someone or filming it yourself and there isn't anything wrong with acting a little fake in front of the camera. Let's just not make too many judgements about the actual house based on a video.

Maybe you can act more excited but no amount of acting could disguise the sad sad new (and active) ADPi's :(

Lol^ but actually Adpi also had theirs professionally done, as did some others(not just the 3 mentioned above). Also, some houses chose to have alum and or current journalism students highlight their day.
Something to keep in mind is that some houses chose to spend their budget on having their Recruitment videos done professionally the summer before. Personally, recruitment videos are just that, "recruiting". Putting a specific image or impression out there to persuade someone. Other houses chose to professionally tape their bid day.
I don't think you can compare the level of alpha phi or adpis professionally videotaped recruitment day to any of the others-they included footage from inside the house, football field, etc. (Certain houses have alum that 'donate' services which is why some houses can put out professional videos for recruitment and bid day). That doesn't mean they were the 'best' by any means. It's the members and their personal excitement that comes across in the video-and it would make sense if the houses people see as 'fun, party houses' appear to have a really fun, upbeat bid day. No one is told to 'act' excited-every single house is excited beyond belief that day-NOT ONE HOUSE NEEDS TO ACT.
Everyones excitement comes through in different ways, some are more outgoing, some are more on the reserved side, but when this board thrives on stereotypes for the majority of the year suddenly when a house they don't like gets high marks its all because it's 'staged'

I will say from now watching several of them, yes, actives might be told to do certain things but most of gphi and adpis actives are doing what every other house was doing that day-taking pictures, singing and celebrating bid day. Looks pretty natural to me, many of those shots were taken from the side, while pictures were being taken, etc. Just give credit where credit is do. If someone what appeared to be a better bid day 'party' than you, so be it.

Has it right. Also people are soooo critical of the "fun party houses" for having "too much fun" and then when fun is seen as a positive thing all of a sudden it's all an act? It just goes to show which houses are really on here and hating on GPhi and APhi. Does it not make sense that houses full of really outgoing party types are gonna be having a blast on bid day?? So dumb!

I liked when Sigma Kappa did a "recruitment promo" for last year, I saw it when I rushed last year, and they used clips that their members shot of each other off their iPhones/Snapchat. It didn't have the same polished look as other videos but you could tell that they were real moments which was cool.

by: ^

I agree. It doesn't matter if it's 'polished', it's what is captured. If some of those videos were in black and white and grainy it couldn't take away from the excitement and pride you could sense by watching peoples true emotions.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a few staged shots for aesthetics but it is really nice to see organic moments in the videos as well.

I'm sorry but I was like everyone else on bid day walking about and saw spontaneous activities and a camera person just meandering. I think you are just jealous yours didn't turn out??

So I guess we can put this topic to rest then. With the exception of one person who felt the only reason gphi, alphaphi and adpi looked like they were having fun on bid day is because they had professionals film, most people now agree that maybe those houses labeled as party and fun, actually do have fun. The majority of what was filmed that day, 95% of it, was genuine excitement and emotion. As another poster said, on bid day, when fun should be seen as a positive, people are still going to hate on certain houses, haha.
