the ability to be selective determines your tier

by:

Everyone is always wondering what the formula is for being top tier vs middle tier vs bottom tier and you can go on and on about grades, competitions, looks, etc. But at the end of the day, the best houses we have are the ones that have the luxury of being able to turn girls away.

GPhi and Kappa are perfect examples. Two extremes. One is a hot, party girl house. One is a snobby, stuck up house. From the outside looking in, if you're not one of those "types" then it can seem confusing that those two houses are both upper middle tier. It's because there are enough PNM's who fit into those molds that Kappa/GPhi are ranked as high as they are. They can turn girls away and still fill an entire PC with their "type" of girl.

Alternatively, Sigma doen't have that luxury. They can't even fill an entire PC. People always comment about how their house seems like a hodgepodge of weird or random girls. That's because they have to take anyone.

Houses like AXO, GPhi DG are getting more selective than they were in the past which is a sign they're improving.

It's all about who's hot and who's not. I'm not saying it's right but when you look at how our tiers are determined, that's really all it boils down to.

And before anyone jumps in and claims that I'm saying GPhi or Kappa are top tier, I'm not. I used them as an example because people are often confused why they rank so high despite being polarizing with most of the sorority women on campus. And it's because they can recruit enough of their "type" and still be selective.

This is literally EXACTLY what being top tier is about - selectivity/desirability. If enough pnms want you then you will have the luxury of choosing the girls you want. It's literally that simple. Though, I definitely wouldn't put DG in that category they're one of those poster child "full of randoms" houses imo

I think DG is getting less random with their most recent pledge classes. They're slowly trying to return to their glory days.

So, what's the point? Kappa is not hot but is at the same level as GPhi? GPhi is improving but Kappa isn't? Kappa is polarizing, but DG and Gphi aren't? I really don't understand.

Yes. The OP made no sense. Just drunken ramblings. I think the point might have been if you are selective you are top tier. But I'm pretty sure we all know that.

I think her point is that there's houses like ADPi, for example, who think that their gades are enough to make them top (or on the other end there's APhi who thinks they're social enough to be top) but the fact is that those girls are still getting leftovers and aren't selective. Above all else selectivity makes you top. GPhi may not get the best grades but that's not what they aim to do. They have a type and they keep to it, Kappa too although they aren't as extreme of an example

Yes but also who you know and where in STL you come from seems to matter. A lot of these houses are narrow minded and unable to think outside of their small world. If you know someone well enough from your past then they can pull you in.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I was in a pledge class that had about 1/3 out of state girls and the rest were from all over Missouri. As one of those out-of-staters I was worried that others would know each other and that I wouldn't fit in. But I was amazed at how few people knew each other. It has been great getting to know everyone and I can't wait to live in the house and further cement our friendships. I'm not saying there aren't some houses that might be cliquey, because i don't know about any house other than mine. But I don't get a sense at all that it's about who you know.

Most selective?
Chi o, pi phi, delta

Least?
Sigma, zeta, phi mu

Consequently, those are our top and bottom three houses.

That's exactly the point OP was making. Girls want to be apart of something exclusive and special. Selective houses tend to be more popular with PNM's because everyone wants to be one of the cool kids.

We can tell you're alum for two reasons. A) you call tridelts delta and B) you think they're still top tier. Please move on from your glory days, it's kind of sad :(

Get most of what OP said, but obvi as the thread went on people didn't. Yes, totally agree, the houses that get who they want are top. but honestly, too much change the last year of who people want. Know many girls that had tri delt and pi phi on their pref bid card, but those were not the top houses-and those girls got their top house. Chi o attracts such a different girl from tri delt and pi phi, and know for a fact the wont put girls who they actually rate high-but know will most likely choose another house, let them go after day 1(especially). To some extent Tri Delt and Pi Phi compete for the same girl, but again, maybe that's why this last year was so crazy with their 'unofficial competition' getting so many great girls. Bottom line, don't write any one off, the best surprises are likely to come in the next 3 weeks!
