recruitment questions
by: PNMI hate to be that annoying little PNM to do this but it seems like a lot of people are active on this site making it a decent place to ask a few questions. I keep reading and hearing things about "suicide," In regards to greek life, what does that mean? Also, there is a lot of talk about rankings and tiers. When in a house that may or may not be top tier, do you notice it? Does not being on top harm your experience in greek life? Finally, how much influence do rec letters and your GPA really have? I have heard so many different opinions and it is making getting prepared for rush more confusing. Thank you!

Suiciding or as your Pi Chi will call it, "Single Option Preference" is when you have more than one house at the end of recruitment but you only sign one on your bid card. On preference night you basically rank the houses you have left in the order you'd want to join and sign the paper. This is an agreement that you'll take a bid from ANY of the houses left on the card, regardless if they're your first choice or not.
Suiciding is when you only rank one house. You're allowed to do it but it's highly advised against. Everyone will try and talk you out of it.
Let's say you have Alpha, Beta, and Zeta houses at the end. And you rank them in that order. The way rush works is that if you don't make the bid list for Alpha, but you do make it for Beta, you end up with a bid from Beta. If you don't make the list for Alpha or Beta, you end up as a Zeta.
With suiciding, if you only rank Alpha and you don't make their bid list, you don't get a bid.
It's all about maximizing your options.

As far as rank and tiers, it really doesn't matter. Tiers, honestly, are peoples opinions, and everyones opinions are different(that's why there is so much debate about who is top tier). I know people who went in thinking negatively about certain houses based upon what they read on these boards and ended up falling in love with the house they thought they had absolutely no interest in. And some come in with high expectations for certain houses and are really let down. It is all a matter of personal opinion and where you feel comfortable. Just plan to be really open to the whole experience and getting to see what each house is all about and where you feel a connection. And if you don 't get invited back to a house you thought you loved-you'll probably be pretty disappointed, but be open to the rest on your list-many girls are cut from houses they thought were a perfect fit but later could never see themselves there because they are so happy with where they end up. If you haven't already, you should go watch the Mizzou Bid day 2015 video-you will see highlights of the week of recruitment as well as Bid Day and the excitement and pride girls take in every single house here at Mizzou. There is not a bad house here!

It looks like suddenly the trolls are coming around on this site trying to turn things negative-but one last point to remember. When you register for recruitment you get to move in to the dorms a week early-and not everyone does that. You will meet a lot of girls on your floor who will be as nervous and excited as you. When you come back at the end of the day, those are the girls you will hang out with. This is one of the greatest parts of recruitment(other than finding 'your' new home)-you will meet girls in your dorm who are also spending their first night, week-YEAR- away from home! You won't only have your new sisters-this is where you will form friendships with girls in EVERY house at Mizzou-this is why MOST people on this site are prob just trolls-most of us meet girls when we are at our most vulnerable state(first week away at college) and spend that whole week bonding-and then find our new homes. you will still go back to all the girls in the dorm-and even girls who drop, aren't asked back to any house, or even suicide-are the girls you will get to know. Just don't let anyone on this site discourage you from going through recruitment for ANY reason. And there are some dorms that will have way more girls than others, but every dorm has girls going through rush-be excited-your freshman year will be one of the best and most memorable! Good luck to you and good for you for putting yourself out there and asking questions!

Tiers only matter on this website and during competition season. I personally only judge a girl by the way she acts.
GPA matters in the sense that you CAN be prevented from getting in a house if your GPA is too low. The first round of cuts is always grades so if you make it past the first round with a house, you've met their GPA cut-off. Recs and legacies do help. A lot of times they guarantee you to another round. And if you're in a tie with someone to be cut from the house, a rec letter can give you the edge over another girl.
It's complicated but here's my advice; get as many rec letters as you can. They can only help. But not having them won't hurt you. I'm in a house that I didn't have a rec letter or legacy for. You'll be fine without them.
