enrollment down 2600 students for fall

by:

Student enrollment is now down 2600 for fall, surpassing the estimation of 1900. They are raising tuition, especially for out of state freshman.

How do you think this will affect this fall's recruitment?

It wont affect falls recruitment. Idiot. There are 53 greek houses, only about half of those people (2600) would have rushed in the first place. That leaves a potential 1300 kids that are missing out on 53 houses. If your so worried go campaign for mizzou and stop wasting ur time sitting on a coach typing out stupid things about how ur not gunna get enough hot 18 year olds to rush! Oh no the world might end! And heres a simple awnser for your stupid question: all it will do is water down pledge classes, use your critical thinking skills. Jesus christ.

I don't understand why someone would sit on their coach. Is that a thing at Mizzou? And exactly what does that accomplish? I think a lot of coaches would object to that.

Isn't it difficult to recruit coaches with this going on?

I'm really more concerned about what surely will be a coach shortage rather than a dip in enrollment.

So at Mizzou people sit on their coaches and no one thinks that's a bad idea? No one? I always thought that's what couches were for.

If less girls drop out of recruitment than usual then maybe it won't have that much of an effect. But, it will probably mean smaller pledge classes. It might be a problem for houses that are built for lots of girls to live in (and houses building new big houses) but overall I think a smaller pledge class where you can get to know everyone would be better. Maybe this will open up more chapters to COB next spring since there are definitely girls that want those spots.

It will have a small effect on the recruitment, but I don't see it as a major problem for now. If the School continues to drop in enrollment in the next 2 more years, than I would be very worried.

My fondest hope is that if fewer women go through recruitment the pledge classes will be smaller. We have enjoyed massive Greek popularity for a long time, but the sizes of pledge classes got out of hand. It's impossible to get to know everyone and with such huge pledge classes there are some girls who never get to live in the house. It would be great if each pledge class could be 60 or less.

The biggest thing that it's going to mean is that everyone is going to be careful about signing leases for 17-18. There will be a lot more upperclassmen living in houses. My guess is that quota will be between 65-70. Which isn't going to be enough to fill pretty much any house in 17-18. Places like Brookside are going to do everything to lock you into a lease and not let go. Don't be in that situation where you are required to live in your sorority house, but have already signed an apartment lease, and then you have to drop out.

Hoping the astronomical rent prices will decline. I know I am holding out for it- I won't be signing a lease in the fall for the next year- that's for sure!

I think the issue that no one really wants to talk about is the decline in the quality of the students coming to Mizzou next year. The students that had several college options (the smarter, more successful kids) are choosing to go elsewhere. The kids that ARE coming to Mizzou are the ones that didn't have any other options. This affects the school in so many more ways than just pledge classes. But houses are going to have to lower their gpa expectations.

This is a problem nationally. There is a low spot demographically because
Gen X just didn't have as many kids as Baby Boomers, who produced millennials. It is such a problem at U. of Wisconsin and Illinois, for example, that they are offering more scholarship money to in-state students to fill their ranks, which means fewer students are opting to attend Mizzou. This happens every other generation, because World War II delayed childbirth among the "Greatest Generation." So don't worry. Mizzou will be just fine. We still have many nationally ranked programs (Journalism, accountancy, nursing) and will still attract great students who want a major university experience.

Yet, other schools' application numbers keep rising. Your argument is flawed and just another excuse to try to cover up the fact that Mizzou is suffering BECAUSE of the protests.

Other schools' application rates are NOT rising. It is their acceptance rates that are rising.

In 1990, a peak year for baby boomer parents giving birth, there were 4.2 million births. By 1998 (the year most of next year's freshmen were born), there were 3.8 million births. The birth rate also dropped from 16.2 per thousand to 14.6. That's a significant change.

I'm wondering if it is the same person who keeps obsessing about how the protests have ruined our school and how ADPi is the ruination of Greek town. It seems like the same narrow-minded, negatively focused troll. Maybe she won't return in fall. We can only hope. Because as far as I'm concerned, I'm in agreement with the person above. I think Mizzou is better in so many ways and if someone opts not to attend this school because students exercise their right to protest, then fu ck 'em. We don't want them here anyway. And if someone thinks a respected mainstream sorority like AdPi is the worst thing that ever happened to Greektown, well we don't that person here, either. It's a big, beautiful world out there, one that is made richer because of our differences, not our similarities. Thank goodness for that.

There is not a doubt that the fall protests had an effect on the drastic decline in enrollment-Mizzous interim chancellor acknowledged this fact months ago. If there is still that one person out there trying to defend that point-ignore them. As for recruitment numbers, last years enrollment showed the 'natural' decline of a couple hundred students, and that did have a minor effect on recruitment numbers(I think 200 less girls were registered). I may be way off but I'm going to guess that there may be 600+ less girls registered for recruitment this year, but only time will tell. It will be interesting to see.

"The enrollment drop and state budget cuts result from an almost unbroken stream of controversies on campus that have garnered national and international attention. The most visible were the campus demonstrations by Concerned Student 1950 and the boycott of athletic activities by the Missouri football team that led to UM System President Tim Wolfe’s resignation"

Source please. New story or editorial? Mainstream publication or right-wing screed? Columnist? Official Mizzou publication? It makes all the difference in the world and these days when anyone posts something without sourcing it, that's pretty irresponsible.

Well, well, well. Just as I thought, "Here it is" posted only part of the story. And while it didn't mention a drop in the birth rate, the story did indeed mention the lower high school graduation numbers. For those who would like the whole story, here is the next paragraph of the very same article:

"Other factors contributing to the decline, Rupp said, include shrinking high school graduating classes, more aggressive recruiting by states such as Alabama and more students being accepted at the University of Illinois, a major regional competitor."

"It should be noted that this shortfall is not a result of legislators in Jefferson City cutting funding. This is prospective students freely deciding that they don’t want to spend their college years as Missouri Tigers; they and their families would rather take their money elsewhere. That should terrify administrators in Columbia. Will Mizzou go the way of other brands scorned by the marketplace, like Kodak, Pontiac, or Ask Jeeves"

You're quoting the National Review? Really? REALLY?????? Speaking of brands scorned by the marketplace, the National Review is one of them. William f. Buckley is a joke and it lost all semblance of credibility a decade ago. I can't BELIEVE you're quoting the National Review. That's like me quoting the Communist Manifesto. it goes as expected. divide these houses not into tiers, but in to halves .and there is not a bad 'half". popular choices will continue to be tri delt, gphi, axo , adpi, pi phi, selectively xo(meaning recruits will select them based on legacy), and also selectively theta. others are in the other half which does not mean they are bad houses, just second selection.
