gpa?
by: PNMHI! I'm super excited to rush this summer as an incoming freshman but I was recently told I should consider rushing sophomore year instead because of my GPA. I am graduating with a 3.0 due to my dedication to athletics and a few family issues over the years. I was wondering how strict each chapter is and if I still have a shot at getting a bid. Thanks!

Hmmm.... You may be considered by some houses, but I wouldn't necessarily encourage you to wait. This is the problem. There are tons of girls going through rush who were outstanding athletes (or actresses or newspaper editors or hospital volunteers or whatever) who graduated with 3.6's or 3.8's or better, and many of us have had family issues (divorce, illness, death of a parent) through the years, too. Your current GPA tells a house that you weren't able to balance things particularly well or that your priorities weren't academic. And every house wants someone who is going to help, not hurt, their GPA. If you think you can raise your GPA, then wait. But that's unlikely because typical freshman classes here are designed to weed people out and you have shown you already have a bit of a problem with focus/balance. You could go through rush this year and see how it goes. You can always drop out and try informal or rush your sophomore year. Hate to be blunt, but that's just how it is.
