why?

by:

I am in a sorority at another college. I went with my Mom to visit my sister for Mom's weekend at Mizzou this past weekend. I have to say that I was really disappointed at how clicky the girls were in her pledge class. They were stuck up, rude and didn't even attempt to talk to any of their sisters except for the girls in "their group". I do understand that the pledge classes at Mizzou are large and it's not possible to be close to every one of your sisters. My pledge class was not that big. However, isn't the point of being in a sorority to make new friends/sisters, getting to know each other and to learn that you need to have an open mind? I really hope things change next year when my sister lives in her sorority house. Do any of you feel like your house is like this as well or is it just my sister's house?

You couldn't possibly know this from one weekend that you spend with your mom and your sister. I don't know what point you are trying to make, but Greek Life at Mizzou is great and our sorority system is one of the best in the nation. If you don't agree, talk to the hundreds of girls who didn't make it into the house they wanted. And if your sister really has problems with her pledge class, I suggest she look within herself to find out why. To have a friend you have to be a friend, and someone probably isn't keeping up her share of the bargain.

Considering that what the OP posted never happened, I think we all have a right to be rude.

You're right! I made it up for fun! Seriously? Know I know you were one of the rude girls!

By sheer size, smaller schools and their Greek systems afford their pledges the opportunity to get to know not only their pledge sisterd but also the older actives and upperclassman.

Mizzou has a great set of larger national sororities, but becoming familiar/close with everyone in the house is nearly impossible.

There are differences in experiences, based on where you go to college.

Totally agree with you. I am lucky that I got to know the other girls in my house, especially the older girls. I am just hoping that my sister can have a good experience. I think Mizzou is a great school with a good Greek system. I'm just praying that her sorority was the right choice for her.

Dear Sister/OP you are correct and I have seen this happen not only in my house but also in several sororities here. Considering the pledge classes are extremely big, the girls tend to gather in smaller groups the first year and form a bond. It would be way to difficult to get to know over 300 girls at once. Don't worry though, once she lives in the house she will get to know the girls that live in the house also, if she makes an effort of course. Actually what Mizzou needs are about 5-8 more sororities!! There are many bigger universities that don't have the house numbers we have here.

I completely agree. With sororities this big, sorority life is what you make of it. It is easy to be forgotten or feel like an outsider. But if you show up to things that are expected of you and genuinely make an effort to be nice/friends with everyone you will succeed. I think that one major benefit of big sororities is that there are so many girls that you can pick out things that you like about everyone and there are so many opportunities to meet different people and feel connected to a sorority's values and morals! Don't worry about your sister, she will find her place! Encouragement and positivity are key:).
