one of those girls

by:

I went through rush in August and dropped when I was heartbroken that so many good houses cut me. I just didn't like the choices that remained. I have had second thoughts, mainly because I have met so many girls in the dorm and through classes who are in all sorts of houses and they are the kinds of girls I would love to call sisters. My GPA is pretty good (3.7 first semester and I think it will be similar this semester) and I want to go through rush again. What are my chances? Will the same houses that cut me before cut me again? And will the others not be interested because I dropped (which could be interpreted as dropping them). I don't want to go through it all again if I don't have a chance. But I would consider any and all houses this time around.

I don't know whether the factors that caused some houses to drop you still exist, or if your current grades make up for a less-than-stellar H.S. GPA. But I would encourage you to try again. What do you have to lose? You already know you can survive, but the only way you can go greek is to put yourself out there and take a risk.

Love your attitude. Go through it again. Bring your best to each house and you have a great chance of getting in. And let us know!

Be sure to have some volunteer hours and other activities to show for your freshman year.

You'd be happy to be a Sigma? Really?

That's what "any and all houses" means.

Wow. Way to promote yourself. I wouldn't go into rush with that attitude - "I'll join any house, so I'm a loser."

Her attitude is not that unusual. It's "I've seen what Greek life is all about and I want to be a part of it." And what's wrong with that? As far as I'm concerned, there are great houses at Mizzou, and there are good houses. There are no bad houses. And it has been said here a million times that the worst house on this campus is equivalent to the best house at many others.

What is it like to be a sophomore with freshmen? Anyone have comments?

There are some houses where there will only be a few sophomores in your pledge class, like TriDelt or PiPhi. There are other houses where there will be a dozen or so at least, and you can easily find your peers and hang out with them like in AXO, Dg and others. It will be harder for you to get into the top houses, but you might not want those houses anyway. So it all works out.

Honestly it's not that much different. The only hassle was living in an apartment and having to drive to come hangout with friends at the house, or not being able to eat meals often with my pledge class unless they ate at the house. They view me the same and often even forget I'm a year older. Once you've gotten your bid being a sophomore doesn't matter, don't worry.

I went through recruitment again my sophomore year for similar reasons. considering your GPA i think you will be just fine. I would recommend getting your name out there and letting your friends in houses know you're going through. although they cant/arent supposed to talk to you during recruitment, they can definitely help pull some strings or talk you up behind the scenes. Just brace yourself because many houses do drop simply because you are a sophomore; however, there were soo many more sophomore and even juniors that went through formal recruitment last year than i expected which was comforting. having friends in houses for sure helps. I hope you find you home, best of luck!

I kind of love this thread. With the one exception, it oozes panhellenic spirit. Thanks ladies.

OP, I wish you the best of luck. Women are rarely released from all houses, so if you go in with a good attitude and an open heart I am confident you will find a home.

Attitude is everything and it seems as if you have a much better attitude this time around. There are great girls in every house. Your grades are fine and you probably already have some friends in many of the houses. So I would say give it a try, keep smiling and see what happens. You've got nothing to lose.

You are most likely going to be dropped from all the same houses unless you have a friend in one that will pull you through. You may end up in a house you had left the first time around. But seriously, what freshman don't understand is that it's better to be greek than not for most, otherwise you wouldn't have rushed. And, seriously there are winners and losers in every house. Enough of the clicks & BS that some houses think they're better-they're not!! 4real

Definitely try again! That's an awesome GPA and I rushed twice as well, and got a different mixture of houses both times. You don't have anything to lose by trying again! Just go in with a completely open mind!

I say you should rush again. You seem to have a great attitude about rush and a more realistic perspective on what being a sorority means when it comes to sisterhood over "good houses" plus your 3.7 in college GPA is a huge leg up for you. No, the same houses won't automatically cut you this time. I rushed as a sophomore and got a bid from a house that cut me as a freshman. I did the same thing you did. Got into college, solidified my GPA, got involved, figured out what I was all about and it worked out wonderfully for me the second time around. Best of luck!!
