gamma phi???
by: PNMHello! I am an out of state rising senior (so I have some time before rush), but I am pretty much set on Alabama. I have a few questions about Gamma Phi Beta. I'd like to preface this with the fact that if I fell in love with Gamma Phi, I would have NO PROBLEM taking a bid, and that rank doesn't really bother me so long as I love the house. As a legacy to Gamma Phi though, I am curious to know a bit more as to why they are where they are in terms of rank. What about the girls/house pushes them toward the bottom? I know about the 2002 incident, but how does that translate to today? What does it mean/ does it matter if a girl is a member of a not so good sorority? I honestly do not mean to turn up any sour feelings on here and I know that ALL of the houses have absolutely phenomenal girls in them, I am really just curious. If anyone could give some insight, that would be great!

I can only give you one opinion based on personal experience during recruitment. They are a great sorority and I have become friends with several actives and they are great girls and like their sisterhood. The impression I had from recruitment (this is my personal experience), as an in-state girl from a larger Alabama city, was that they did not seem interested that much in me and I felt like I did not fit with them. They seemed more northern to me than the other houses and I am very Southern in my appearance, dress, accent, and stuff. Maybe it was my own insecurity, but I ended up not going very far with them in the process and ended up in another new row house, which I love. The thing to remember is this -- no house at Bama is weak, there are all kinds of girls in each, you will have "gut" feelings about each and you should follow your instincts. Nobody is better or lower than another freshman girl because she is a pledge to one or another sorority. Only extremely shallow girls think like that and you would nto want to be friends with those kinds of girls anyway (at least I don't).
Good luck and enjoy Senior Year.

First, no house is perfect. I'm an active of an "upper tier" house, and I can say that my house is not perfect in any way. But what I can say is that we try our hardest to make every girl feel comfortable during rush. We want girls to cry on bid day, not because they got our house and are sad about it, but because they know they are going to have the best damn 4 years of their life. Unfortunately, this really isn't the case with Gamma Phi. I don't doubt there are great girls there, but most girls don't leave Ice Water Teas saying "I love Gamma Phi!" In life, someone has to be at the bottom, and that is where Gamma Phi is. Could that change? For sure. Having a new house might help. But they have a low GPA which doesn't help and don't swap/hangout with popular fraternities. If you want to go Gamma Phi, girl you go. But during rush, I felt uncomfortable and my conversations were not meaningful. I only went back two rounds, but I knew I would be very upset if that would be the bid I would get. Your experience could be totally different though!
