the rush funnel
by: truth be told
Since this board has clearly been taken over by people who are either bitter about their rush results or naive to how things really work, here is the real deal. Rush is a funnel process; mutual selection means that the most desired houses, typically Old Row + Pi Phi, ADPi and Zeta, make the heavy cuts in the beginning. These houses will release over 1000 pnms the first round and know for the most part who these people are before rush week starts. Basically, those houses tend to do the best at the end of the week and get what they are looking for, where as the others want to make quota.

The trouble with this theory is all the inferior, uncultured, poorer native Alabamans know all the top tier sororities and fraternities which exclusively belong to New Row will shun them and they stand very limited chances to pass the much much higher standards of New Row. Native Alabamans flock to Old Row because they know their place in the societal tier which is Alabama is at the BOTTOM of all ranks within the US and they will stand a much better chance with the BOTTOM TIER standards of Old Row. They will also be with their "own kind" and not be compared to the far wealthier, sophisticated, cultured OOS dominated houses on New Row where they have a very very slim chance to meet the much much higher bar to be given a bid.
So yes Old Row gets the bottom of the barrel first because they know Old Row is their best chance to get a bid because their same friends they have had from elementary school will hopefully get them a bid because they realize their chances are almost zero at the much more prestigious New Row houses.

The cool thing about Bama sororities is that money, social standing, and tradition play less of a role in the rankings now than they used to.
At Texas, Pi Phi, Kappa, and Theta will always be considered the best because they're the oldest and the wealthiest, even though they're not necessarily the prettiest, smartest, or most involved. AXO and Phi Mu wouldn't be considered good at Texas just because they're not "old money."

Things don't completely change in a few years but all it takes is one pledge class to completely change the outlook of a sorority. Stop dwelling on the past and work with what you have now!! We all know a few houses who definitely just ride on their old reputations as they are falling through the cracks.

It's just not here it's everywhere. And it's just not fraternities and sororities it's jobs, clubs, internships, etc. Haven't you heard the saying it's not what you know but WHO you know. It's sad but true.
